Celebrating
10 Years of
Excellence
Greetings Pinney families!
February in Ohio will certainly bring changes to our weather. Please help your children dress appropriately when they come to school. We will have outdoor recess whenever possible. We will use the
following guidelines for outdoor recess:
• 20 degrees or below - all recesses will be indoors
• 21-25 degrees - lunch recess will be indoors & shorter AM or PM recess will be outside
• 26 degrees and warmer - all recesses will be outdoors
I encourage you to review the enclosed flyer that shares information about the Community Champion
Awards. Sponsored by the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and Dublin City Schools, the Community
Champion Awards is a program to nurture young citizens who engage society through leadership
and service. The program honors students in grades 4-12 and DCS staff who exemplify the best of
volunteerism, character, leadership, and a sense of caring and responsibility for others. Nominations
are due by February 24th.
We had several fun events in the month of January. Thank you to all of our students that attended
skate night at the Chiller and the popular movie night. Both were packed with smiling faces. Look
for more exciting events coming up in February and March.

Office Communication
• Students may not enter the building until 9:18 a.m. daily. If you are dropping children off in
the morning, please walk them through the front entrance. They are not permitted to enter
through the side door until 9:18 a.m.
• Call the office or the automated attendance line (718-8960) if your child is going to be absent
or late. Please send in a note if your child is signing out early for an appointment.
• If your child is going to be absent from school, we would appreciate a phone call before 9:30
a.m. of that day. Ohio state law does require us to now have a written note upon a child’s
return to school after an absence of any kind. An absence form can be found in the
downloads section of our Pinney website (Absence Notification Form). We would appreciate
your help by sending in this form, or a note explaining the absence upon your child’s return
to school. It is also important that you know that absences due to a family-planned vacation
are no longer excused absences.
• All phone number changes should take place at the building level. Please do not call the
district office to change your contact information. Please call the Pinney office for questions
(798-3570)
• Send in a note if your child’s end of the day arrangements change. Without a note, we will
follow typical end of day routine.
• Both students need a note giving parent permission when bringing home a friend. New
“Note to School” pads can be picked up in the office.
• Write your child’s first and last name on the inside of lunch boxes, backpacks, jackets and
other items so that we can return them if lost. All lost and found items will be donated to
Welcome Warehouse at the end of each trimester.
• Give the buses the right of way during arrival and dismissal. No cars in the bus loop during
the following times (8:45-9:15 a.m. & 3:45-4:15 p.m.)
• Be patient in the pick-up line at the end of the day. Cars need to remain in a single file line to
pick up students. Also, please drop off your child at the sidewalk or side door in the
morning. A Pinney staff member will monitor the side door beginning at 9:18 a.m. daily. We
do not want children walking through cars and/or traffic. Student safety is our priority.
• Check your child’s backpack frequently.

Clinic Communication with Mrs. Slack & Mrs. Pagan
The Dublin City School District has developed policies to help insure the health and safety of
all our students. These policies have been developed in direct correlation with the recommendations of both Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Centers for Disease Control. It is even
more important that parents familiarize themselves with these policies and adhere to them as
we move into the time of year when flu and other contagious illnesses become more prevalent. Please take time now to review the following information. If all of our parents follow
these policies, we can reduce illness and absences for your child.
• It is important to keep any child home exhibiting signs of illness. Signs of illness include fever
of 100 degrees or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, chills, irritability, or unusual skin
rash. Other signs of illness are red and crusty eyes, as well as, other symptoms that are unusual for your child. If your child has been home ill, they must be symptom free without medication for 24 hours before returning to school. If they have been placed on an antibiotic for a
contagious illness, they must be on the antibiotic for 24 hours before returning to school.
• Please remember that parents are responsible for supplying the school with any medication
(prescription and over-the-counter) that needs to be given during school hours. The appropriate forms(s) must be completed for clinic staff to be able to administer the medication. Prescription and non-prescription forms are available on the district web site at
www.dublinschools.net or from the clinic. The clinic staff is happy to help you determine which
forms are needed for your child.
• Please make sure to call the school if you change phone numbers. This information is vital
as we often need to contact a parent(s) if there is an injury or illness. When listing someone
as an emergency contact, please make sure it is a local person who would be able to pick up
an ill child.
• Remember that cough drops are considered a medication. They must be kept in the clinic
and must be sent in with a non-prescription medication form that has been completed by a
parent. Students are not permitted to carry cough drops with them during the school day.
• When leaving a message on the attendance line, please provide any symptoms your child
has such as student's temperature, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, vomiting,
diarrhea, etc. Please also include if your child has been seen by a doctor or travelled abroad.
Please feel free to call the clinic and speak with the clinic aide or school nurse regarding any
questions or concerns you have. Thank you for your helping to keep all of our students
healthy and safe this winter.

Important Food Allergy Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to take this opportunity to remind all of our parents that Pinney has many students with serious food allergies. Each student ‘s allergies are different and unique. In order
to keep our students who have food allergies safe and healthy while in school, please remember that when you are planning parties for your child’s classroom, always check with
your child’s teacher or the clinic staff to see if that classroom has any student with serious
food allergies. Allergy Alert letters went out early this year to inform parents of allergies in
their child’s classroom. Foods to which any student is allergic will not, in most circumstances, be allowed into their classroom. It can be very difficult to determine if a food item
contains particular foods as some of those food products go by many names that most people are unfamiliar with. I want to encourage our parents and families to consider bring nonfood treats such as pencils, puzzles or a non-food activity.
I would also like to remind our parents of students with food allergies to keep your child’s
medications updated. The clinic staff makes every effort to let a parent know if their child’s
medication will be expiring. Forms may change format occasionally for varying reasons. The
clinic staff will make sure you are given the most up to date form. All of our current forms
are also available on the district web site at www.dublinschools.net. Please ask the clinic
staff, if you have any questions about which form you need for your child. Judi Slack is our
Clinic Aide (Mon-Fri) and Patti Pagan is our school nurse (Two days per week). We also
have a certified nurse on staff who works in our special education department (Carolyn
Joyce - Mon-Fri).

During the month of February, I will visit each classroom, grades K-5,
for one guidance lesson. The lessons will focus on Conflict (K), Bullying (1st-2nd), Stress and Anger Management (3rd-5th).
In kindergarten, we will read A Cat and A Dog by Claire Masurel. We
will discuss what conflict is and how Cat and Dog overcame their
conflict. We will share strategies we can use when we experience
conflict with our friends and family.
In first grade, we will read and discuss Howard B. Wigglebottom
Learns About Bullies by Howard Binkow. We will talk about who gets
bullied, who does the bullying and strategies we can use when we
experience bullying (ignore, walk Away, use words, report).
In second grade, we will read and discuss My Secret Bully, by Trudy Ludwig. We will define
the word bullying; targeted, on purpose and more than once. Students will then practice different strategies to use in bullying situations; ignore, walk away, use a strong voice and report. I will end the lesson by reading scenarios and asking students to decide whether or not
they are bullying situations.
In third grade, we will read and discuss Wemberly Worried, by Kevin Henkes. We will share
situations that we experience that make us worried or stressed. Students will then participate
in an activity that requires them to choose feelings they experience in stressful situations and
physically feel the weight stress can cause on an individual by carrying these feelings in a
bag.
In fourth grade, we will read and discuss A Boy and A Bear by Lori Lite. Students will share
situations that make them feel stress and what stress does to their bodies. They will then
work together in small groups using balloons to demonstrate different levels of stress. We
will discuss the activity as a class; sometimes we need to handle our feelings with care;
other times we feel like we are losing control; sometimes we do lose control; and other times
we can withstand a variety of interactions.
The fifth grade lesson will focus on anger management. We will begin with a discussion of
anger; what makes us angry, how we feel and how we handle this emotion. Students will
then participate in an activity that requires them to visit five different “anger stations” where
they will practice strategies for dealing with their anger.
Girls Group is a small group for girls, grades 2-5, that focuses on friendship, self-confidence
and empowerment. Group will begin the week of March 5, 2012 and will meet for thirty minutes, once a week, for six weeks. If you think your child would befefit from this group, please
contact me directly at cellar_leslie@dublinschools.net or 718-8953.

AUTHOR VISIT - IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT AUTOGRAPHS
James Preller will be visiting Eli Pinney on Feb. 23, 2012. During the month of January, PTO conducted
a book order to give our students the opportunity to buy a book for the purpose of having it autographed by Mr. Preller. If you missed the book order, you can purchase a book by James Preller at a
local book store and have your child bring it to Mrs. O. in the library. An autograph form will be placed
in the book listing the name of your child. If you wish, the autograph message can also include names
of your family members. James Preller will not be meeting with the students as he autographs the
books. The autographed books will be handed out to the students following the author visit.

Physical Education * Ms. Hathaway
The students played a winter holiday game called Beat the Grinch. It is a tag game in
which all students had the opportunity to be the Grinch and try to tag the Whos. The Whos
started in Whoville and ran across the gym to Mt. Crumpit, the Grinch’s cave. The Whos
tried to bring back the presents that the Grinch had already stolen. If a Who was tagged,
they were frozen in the snow until another Who arrived with the sled (two scooters) and
gave them a ride back to Whoville.
The 1st and 2nd grade students have been working on the skill of throwing. We
took several lessons to discuss, practice and perfect the six steps to an appropriate throw.
The six steps are: 1. turn your side to the target, 2. step with opposition, 3. make an L
shape with your arms, 4. rotate your trunk, 5. throw or release the ball and 6. follow
through. After a multitude of throwing opportunities and experiences, we transferred our
throwing technique to game situations. We played hot potato tag, pinball, battleship and
star wars. The students have discovered that by utilizing proper throwing technique, it enables them to throw with force and be more accurate.
The 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are finishing up a badminton tournament. Before the winter break, the students were introduced to badminton skills and strategies. We
are now using those new talents to compete in a round robin tournament. Each student
has become not only an expert on the badminton skill set, but they are also able to properly
keep score, know when and where to rotate, boundary rules, serving guidelines, and game
rules.
Our year will continue with everyone engaged in an Acrosport unit. Acrosport is a
combination of many different components: balance, jumps, landings, strength building,
climbing, swinging, rhythm, and tumbling. Within this unit, the students will have multiple
climbing and swinging opportunities: the climbing wall, the cargo net, the climbing rope,
and the swinging rope. Scooters are a great FUN way for students to build strength. There
are many components to our balance portion of Acrosport. The students are encouraged to
hold individual and partner balances as well as use balance beams. We will use the beams
for movement, poses and also invent tricks using balls and hoops while crossing the beam.
Jumping and landing is always a favorite of our students. While jumping off platforms, the
students will display different body shapes and spins and apply proper landing technique.
Music Notes with Mrs. Casto
The music room has been full of fun and exploration for all grades.
First graders can now identify a steady beat in any type of music presented to them. They
can play, tap and move to the beat at many different speeds. They are now discovering and
exploring word rhythm which will soon become true rhythmic values! Grizzly Bear seems to
be new favorite song and game for the first graders.
Second graders continue to explore instruments and making connections to how sound is
created in each instrument. They have a true understanding of string and brass instruments
and will be learning more about woodwind and percussion instruments in the coming weeks.
Second graders are also expanding their list of known pitches and they are learning new
songs and games that use the pitch “low.”
Third graders have mastered the pentatonic scale and are now expanding it with the use of
“low.” Many seem to enjoy the new songs Jim Along Josie and Old Mr. Rabbit. They are also
learning a new rhythm pattern that combines three uneven sounds on one heartbeat. We call
it “blueberry.” A new favorite using “blueberry” is a French folk song called I Hear the Millwheel. Students have enjoyed learning about how mills were used centuries ago and how
they are used today and singing in French has been a lot of fun!
Fourth graders are quickly becoming recorder masters! They have learned how to properly
create sound and hold their new instruments and can read and play G, A and B on the staff.
They have also been exploring the rhythmic pattern used in syncopated music through singing, playing and dancing.
Fifth graders have had the opportunity to play several new songs on many classroom instruments. After learning how music in compositions is organized, students worked in small
groups to create original compositions. We then added all the groups together to create one
large work. Fifth graders are also diving into a research project on composers. Students have
selected a composer that they find interesting and also enjoy his/her music. After finding out
some biographical information, students will share their research in various ways they choose
with their class. So far, some ideas include creating a music video, a skit or a movie about
their chosen composer.
Library News - Mrs. Organiscak
Eli Pinney students are preparing for the upcoming author visit with James Preller on Feb.
23rd. Preller, a native of New York, is the acclaimed author of the Jigsaw Jones series, Six
Innings: A Game In The Life, an ALA Notable Book, and other books for children of all ages.
Do you remember the classic poem Casey at the Bat by Ernest Thayer? Preller has reworked this poem as Mighty Casey, a story about a baseball team named the “Delmar
Dogs”. Lucky for the Dogs that the outcome of their baseball game was more successful
than that of the Mudville team in Thayer’s poem.
Students are continuing to learn about the features of Destiny, our new library management
system. Students in grades 3 - 5 have received an introduction to One Search, a feature
which provides help with homework and research by organizing research databases and allowing a student to search multiple resources, including the library collection as well as free
databases in one easy and time-saving search. It enables a student to view a complete list
of search results at one glance. Here are the directions for One Search:
From the Eli Pinney Home page, select Pinney Library.
Under Links, select Destiny Quest.
Click Login. Username is year of high school graduation last name_first full name
(Example: 21smith_samuel) Password is the student’s ID number. Select Login.
Click Exit Quest. Then select Library Search. Select the tab for “Power”.
Enter a keyword in the search box and click “Include Online Resources”.
Click the boxes to choose encyclopedias, reference databases and search engines.
Select SEARCH.
Finally, I would like to mention that I will be retiring at the end of February. I am looking
forward to spending more time with my family. I have full confidence in the librarian who
will take my place March – May. Her name is Leeann Gallaway, and she has ten years experience working in the Hilliard School District. She will continue the instruction of the library
curriculum, using lesson plans that I have prepared for her.
I would like to thank the Eli Pinney Community for their support of the library program over
the years. Special thanks to the many volunteers who devoted time and energy, helping
with the daily tasks of shelving and checking out books and with programs such as book
fairs and author visits. As I leave Pinney, I know that I will miss the children most of all.
They have provided me with many magical teaching moments and many wonderful memories! It has been my pleasure getting to know them and teaching them in Library Class!
Warm Wishes!
