Most striking in the year ending June 30 has been the growth of our connections across the nation. With active delegates in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Vision 2020 is increasing its visibility daily. With 65 National and Regional Allies, organizations whose combined membership includes more than 20 million women and girls, we are collaborating to engage many more voices in the call for women’s equality. The Third National Congress was held in November in Portland OR, which was celebrating the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in that state. Vision 2020 Delegates and National Allies from across the country reviewed successes and developed strategies to reach Vision 2020 goals to increase women in senior leadership positions, to achieve pay equity, and to promote family-friendly workplace policies, voter mobilization and civic engagement. “She Flies With Her Own Wings,” the Oregon motto, was the theme of an evening event that attracted an overflow crowd from the region, where we honored former Gov. Barbara Roberts and documentary film-maker Jennifer Siebel Newsom. A highlight of our year surely was our announcement in April at the National Constitution Center that, in the year 2020, Philadelphia will be host city for the nation’s centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote. Our continuing momentum is made possible by the unwavering support of our Sponsors, especially The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company and Drexel University, which have believed and invested in Vision 2020 since its inception. The year ahead promises to be one of action, growth and increased collaboration. We’re glad you’re with us! Equality in Sight, Lynn Yeakel Vision 2020 Founder and Co-Chair Rosemarie B. Greco Vision 2020 Co-Chair 3 4 Our History When Vision 2020 was first imagined in 2009, it was a big dream—women's equality by 2020—with a small team of people to help make it a reality. The Vision 2020 core Team—Founder and Co-Chair Lynn Yeakel, Co-Chair Rosemarie B. Greco and Project Director Catherine Ormerod—began building a structure to share their vision of women's equality on a national stage. In 2010, Vision 2020 was launched by its Founding Sponsors, Drexel University and Drexel University College of Medicine, and its Presenting Sponsor, The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, which shared a commitment to women's leadership. Delegates were selected from all 50 states and powerful women's organizations across the country became the first of Vision 2020's National Allies. Supporters embraced Vision 2020's goal to achieve women's equality by the year 2020, 100 years after the suffragists won the right to vote, and the momentum began. In 2010, Vision 2020 held the First National Congress at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and began a national Conversation about Women and Leadership. It commissioned a Women’s History exhibition, funded by McDonald’s, and an Educators’ Guide for middle school teachers, which includes historical information on women. In 2011, five national goals were set for the decade, and Vision 2020 Delegates began developing and implementing State Initiatives to advance these goals. At the Second National Congress in Chicago, the Vision 2020 Delegates, National Allies and Leadership established strategies and benchmarks to reach the goals and laid the foundation for the collaboration that will ensure success. In 2012, Vision 2020 Delegates began to implement their State Initiatives to advance women’s equality. They held public seminars to encourage women to run for elected office; they developed a program to support women veterans; and they proclaimed success for an initiative to erase the gender gap in gubernatorial appointments to state boards and commissions. The Third National Congress, in Portland OR highlighted Vision 2020 collaborations with 65 National Allies and inspired determination to work in tandem to advance women’s economic and social equality. 4 5 Our Commitment Vision 2020 is a national coalition of organizations and individuals united in the commitment to achieve women's economic and social equality. The Five National Goals are : • Increase the number of women in senior leadership positions in American life. • Advance women's economic security and achieve pay equity. • Promote family-friendly workplace policies. • Educate young people to value gender equality, shared leadership, and civic engagement. • Engage and educate women voters and increase women’s participation in the political process, with particular emphasis on a record-setting turnout of women voters in 2020. Planning for the 100th Anniversary Celebration Vision 2020 announced that Philadelphia will host the nation’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s voting rights in the Year 2020. The responses to a stakeholders’ survey revealed strong endorsements of Vision 2020’s direction and commitment to achieving equality by the year 2020. The Vision 2020 Leadership Circle embraced the goal “50-50 by 2020.” The Strategic Directions call for: Expansion of engaged and active Delegates from 102 to 180, reflecting state demographics, by July 2014. Development of a concentrated campaign to attract a significant percentage of men as Vision 2020 individual members. Engagement of the National Allies by building a formidable, cohesive group under each Vision 2020 goal, aligning the strengths of many. Replication of successful Delegates’ State Initiatives across the country. Based on the track record and early successes, new Vision 2020 Delegates may choose to replicate models that: Increase women in senior leadership positions in government Recruit, engage and educate women for civic engagement Provide mentorship opportunities; Engage statewide audiences in conferences that promote the goals and actions that will accelerate women’s advancement. This discussion was a part of a three-day conference, “Women and Warfare: From Troy to the Trenches,” at the University of Edinburgh. In April 2013, Vision 2020 held a press conference with support of Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and the National Constitution Center announcing Philadelphia as the host of the nation’s Centennial Celebration of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. Vision 2020 led two panel discussions on Title IX, part of 1972 federal legislation that bans sex discrimination at educational institutions and that has allowed millions of women and girls to participate in sports for over 40 years. In September 2012, Vision 2020 partnered with the Drexel University Athletic Department in, “Beyond Athletics: A Conversation About Title IX and Sexual Misconduct.” During the Vision 2020 Third National Congress in Portland, OR, the Title IX panel discussion was shared with National Delegates, Allies and other supporters. In August 2012, Vision 2020 National Advisor and University of Miami President Donna Shalala wrote an op-ed urging more women to vote in upcoming elections. The piece circulated to combined readership of 3.4 million. 9 10 Leadership Circle Members Co Chairs: Lynn Yeakel and Rosemarie Greco Subha Barry* Board Chair Cancer Institute of New Jersey Deborah Brittain Vice President, Preod Corporation Susan Butler Founder and CEO of the Susan Bulkeley Butler Institute for the Development of Women Leaders Patricia Diaz-Dennis Senior Vice President and Assistant General Counsel, Retired - AT &T Nuria Fernandez* Chief Operating Officer N.Y. Facebook followers tripled since 2011 Vision 2020 tweets reach 7,000 More than 17,000 blog visitors More than 2,000 monthly visitors to the Vision 2020 website Nearly 1,000 LinkedIn connections Message of the Month Vision 2020 National Office provides Delegates with timely communication tools each month. For example, for Women’s History Month in March, Vision 2020 noted only nine statues of women are among the 100 Americans honored by the 50 states in National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol. Delegates from the nine states blogged on these foremothers’ legacy. In an online poll, voters overwhelmingly chose suffragist Alice Paul to be honored and join Rosa Parks’ statue, if another woman receives this national recognition. Delegates were also encouraged to identify other statues of women leaders in their states and use social media to draw attention to these women’s achievements. Vision 2020 Delegate poses in Laramie, WY, with the statue of Louisa Swain, the first woman in the nation to vote under laws giving women equality with men. 12 13 Budget and Growth Vision 2020’s budget for fiscal year 2013 was $450,000.
