Development of Mobile Web Apps for Accessing Course Content Teaching Partners (Olmsted, Jodi & Kele Anyanwu) Project January 23, 2015 Rationale 1)  Research shows students preference for anytime, anywhere access to course materials. 2)  General characteristic of Millennial for want instant access to everything. 3)  To encourage students to see their smartphones as tools for academic engagement and not necessarily as social media tools. 4)  Student ownership of these devices have shown a steady increase 77% in 2013 (Smartphones) compared to 65% in 2013. (Educase Center for Analysis and Research, 2013) Goals: 1)  To encourage students to see their smartphones as tools for academic engagement and not necessarily as social media tools. 2)  Introduce students to mobile app development without coding skills as an effective instructional tool. 3) Success in this project can encourage professors / students to consider gradual transition of course materials to mobile platforms Development: 1) Identified freely available tools online for mobile device app development that requires no computer programming knowledge or skill (Point & Click Development). 2) We decided on one of such tools dedicated for educators because of its simple interface, ease of use and instructional tools – www.Cleverlize.com Our Product Assessment
1) We shall develop an online Google survey that will be administered at midpoint/final month of classes to assess student likeability of accessing their course syllabus/outline using mobile devices. 2) In our last presentation, we stated we were going to carry out a survey to assess students experiences on use of the app; time constraints could not permit this. 3) Since one of the modules in Dr. Kele Anyanwu’s syllabus involved students building mobile web apps like we introduced in our first presentation, we decided to do the survey after they completed the course module on app development. Survey Form – Q 5, 6, & 7 Results Mean Standard Deviation Question 5 Question 6 1.93 0.59 Question 7 3.8 0.83 3.73 1.06 Mobile App Samples by Students Conclusion All the students in this section agreed that creating a mobile app with this tool is not difficult and rated its instructional value very useful apart from student #6 in the data who did not find it useful at all. They were positive regarding improving their mobile app for instruction skills. If teacher preparation program are to remain relevant in the future, they should begin to address integration mobile devices in the curriculum as a core competence for teacher preparation. THANK YOU
