Womack, dean of Methodist College, today announced the appointment of Dr. James W. Swindell as a part-time instructor of real estate in the Department of Economics and Business Administration. Dr. Swindell is the third professional resource person from Fayetteville who has joined Methodist College. Melville M. Murray, Jr., Certified Public Accountant, presently teaches courses in advanced accounting, and Russell C. Crowell, Certified Life Underwriter, teaches insurance in the fall semester. Dr. Swindell, who holds a doctor of law degree from Cornell University Law School, is a partner in Gadsden and Swindell, a local law firm. He is a member of the North Carolina Bar, and also holds the Master Of Divinity degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Maryland. After earning his BS, Dr. Swindell entered the ministry fro two years serving as an assistant pastor and pastor of Baptist churches in New York. In the spring of 1973, he was a faculty member in the Ithaca, NY, City School District's Home Tutorial Program. In the fall of 1973, Dr. Swindell completed a book manuscript entitled "Playing The Library Game." In the Fayetteville area, Methodist College received a grant totaling $2,000. The North Carolina colleges and universities are among almost 1,000 private accredited two- and four-year institutions across the country which are sharing in $1,300,000 in Sears Foundation funds for the 1974-75 academic year. Funds may be used unrestrictedly as the colleges and universities deem necessary. In addition to its unrestricted grant program, The Sears-Roebuck Foundation each year conducts a variety of special-purpose programs in elementary, secondary, higher and continuing education. The public is invited, and there is no admission charge. This is the second in a series of four programs dealing with the urban growth of Cumberland County. The research project is supported by a grant from the North Carolina Committee for Continuing Education in the Humanities, and is under the direction of Dr. Sudhakar Gautam, chairman of Methodist's Economics and Business Administration Department. Panelists for Wednesday's program include: Dr. Claude L. Stephens, Jr., a Fayetteville physician; Denny R. Shaffer, chairman of the Fayetteville Sierra Club; Ray A. Muench, Jr., manager of Fayetteville's Public Works Commission; and Ms. Roberta Waddle, Land Use Chairman of the Fayetteville-Cumberland County League of Women Voters. Dr. Richard W. Pearce, president of Methodist College, will serve as moderator. Each panelist will speak for about 15 minutes. The final hour will be set aside for audience participation and questions. They will arrive early Friday and immediately begin two days of rehearsal and performance. The select musicians are chosen from a 15 county area which comprises the Southeastern District of the North Carolina Instrumental Music Educators Organization. Over 200 auditioned Jan. 11 at Lumberton High School before a panel of judges. After performing, 130 were invited to comprise two bands which will rehearse all day Friday and Saturday and then give a free public concert on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Reeves Auditorium on campus. "The two bands will play an hour-long concert which will consist of challenging band literature of the representative repertoire", according to J. Mike Rogers, band director at Methodist, and coordinator of the clinic. One of the bands will be directed by Capt. Robert Fairchild of the Armed Forces School of Music, Little Creek, Va. The other band will be directed by Ed Taylor, director of the Clinton (NC) High School Band. Assisting the two directors will be various music educators, and local music merchants, the Methodist College band and music .-students at Methodist.
