William I. Slifkin of Route 2 , St. Pauls, was awarded an A . B . in economics
and business administration at Methodist College's l l t h commencement exercises
held Sunday , May 12.
Commencement speaker was Dr. Arnold K. King of Chapel Hill, special
assistant to the president of the Consolidated Universities of North Carolina.
Speaking at the 11 a . m . Baccalaureate Service was Dr. Lorenzo P. Plyler, associate
professor of religion at Methodist College.
A 1966 graduate of the Hackley School in Tarrytown, N . Y . , Slifkin is the son of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Lester Slifkin.
He attended the University of Denver for two years , where he was a member of
Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
A dean's list student at Methodist, Slifkin completed requirements f o r a
degree under the U . S . Army's Degree Completion(Bootstrap) Program.
He is presently on active duty as a sergeant with the 82n Airborne Division
at Ft. Bragg.

A 1969 graduate of Union Pines High School i n Cameron, Mrs. Womack is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Seabolt Sr.
Awarded an A.A. from Sandhills Community College, Mrs. Womack was a
dean's list student at Methodist. She was also secretary of the Psychology Club, 1
a member of the Steering Commi ttee and a member of Koinonia.
She and her husband, LaVerne B. Womack J r . , a student at Methodist,
will move to Atlanta this fall, where her husband will attend Candler School of
Theology at Emory University.

A 1970 graduate of Fork Union Military Academy, Willard is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Fred B. Willard of 2211 Wayne Ave., Charlottes ville.
A dean's list student at Methodist, Willard was awarded a Methodist
College letter in baseball.
A member of the college's baseball team for four

years, he was a tri-captain of this year's team.
At this spring's Awards Day Assembly, Willard received the Marie C. Fox
Philosophy Award for "exhibiting in his studies outstanding analytic ability,
philosophical perspective and creative potential."
He plans to work toward a graduate degree in social work this fall.

A 1970 graduate of Herricks Senior High School in New Hyde Park, Valentine
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Richard Valentine of 32 Irwin Street, New Hyde
Park.
While at Methodist College, Valentine served as president of the College
Chorus for three years. He was house manager, hall counselor and president of
his dorm, Cumberland Hall.
President of Koinonia during his junior year, Valentine was also public
defender of the Student Government Association High Court, and vice president

of the Religion and Philosophy Coloquium.

Licensed to preach in North Carolina, he served as assistant pastor at
two churches. His responsibilities included visitation counseling, youth work,
choir director and teacher. Valentine plans to attend Wesley Theological Seminary

Mr. Stuckey.
While at Methodist College, Miss Stuckey was a member of the Student
Government Association Senate, clerk of the Senate, chairman of the Senate Finance
Committee; a cheerleader, a member of the Judicial Board of her dorm, Weaver Hall;
a member of the Constitution Committee and a member of Koinoiiia.
Named the SGA's Outstanding Senior Female for "her active participation
in campus life", Miss Stuckey was also elected senior representative to the 1974-75
Spring Festival Court. Awarded a certificate of appreciation and a plaque at the
SGA Awards Banquet, she also received this year an Outstanding Senior Award in
cheerleading and a Methodist College letter as a cheerleader.

A 1970 graduate of Elizabethtown High School, Miss Smith is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Caddie C. Smith of Route 2 , Elizabethtown.
While at Methodist College, Miss Smith served as head cheerleader, senior
class secretary, secretary-treasurer of the Monarch Club and on the President's

Council. A member of the Student Government Association Senate, she was on the
Senate Finance Committee and External Affairs Council. Elected to the Homecoming
Queen Court, in her junior year, Miss Smith was also a member of the Student
Education Association.
At the college's recent Athletic Banquet, Miss Smith received four awards. In
addition to receiving a Methodist College letter and named Most Valuable Cheerleader,
she also received an Outstanding Senior Award. Miss Smith was also named recipient
of the Sherry Sellers Award, which goes to the cheerleader "who best exemplifies the
same qualities and character as Miss Sellers when she was a cheerleader."
Miss Smith, who plans to teach in Raleigh this fall, completed her student teaching
this spring with a first grade class at the Reilly Road School in Cumberland County.

Association, a member of the Economics and Business Club, the President's Council,
the History and Political Science and the Spanish Clubs.
A member of the May Court, Mrs. Sanderford was the 1973 Homecoming Queen.
In her junior year, she was prosecuting attorney and a member of the Judicial Board

Her husband, Paul Sanderford, is also a graduate of Methodist College. He

Upon his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1978, Bell plans to enter the foreign
missionary work in Latin America. He was ordained by the Southern Baptist
Convention in 1971, after licensing by Windsor Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City .

Oaks, N . C .
An elementary education major at Methodist College, Miss Bonner is also a
member of the President's Council and secretary-treasurer of the Art Club. She
has been a member of the Student Education Association, the Carillon sports
editor and assistant editor of the yearbook; and secretary-treasurer of the Women's
Athletic Association.

from 3 to 5 p . m . , Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a . m . to 1 p . m . and from
3 to 6 p . m. on Fridays .
The senior economics and business administration major is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. J . P . Elkins of 2208 Pershing St., Durham.
Awarded an A-A. degree from Louisburg College, Elkins has won numerous
awards for his photography in shows at Methodist College. His most recent
prizes include a third place in graphics in the Methodist College 8th annual
Student Art Exhibition for a black and white photography print entitled, "All In

A Day's Chores"; and an honorable mention in Methodist College's First Annual
Spring Art Festival for a color photograph entitled, "The Wedding."
Among the works in his current one-man exhibit are outside portraits, several
of which were taken in the famed Duke Gardens in Durham; and a time exposier
of "Christmas decorations in downtown Durham.

Miss Mary Alice Gore of Tabor City has been awarded a District 6 Pilot Club
Scholarship for the coming year.
A junior early childhood education major at Methodist College, Miss Gore
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert L. Gore of Route 3, Tabor City.
According to Mrs . Delane Lee of Fayetteville, chairman of the education
and international relations committee for the local Pilot Club, "this is the first
time our local club has had a winner on the District Level. Sixteen young people
from across the state competed for the scholarship."
Miss Virginia Gayle Godwin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rubin Godwin of
1812 McGougan Road, Fayetteville, a graduating senior at Methodist, has been
the recipient of the local Pilot Club Scholarship for the past two years.
Miss Hazel Horton of Fayetteville, cochairman of the education and
international relations committee for the local Pilot Club, said "the Pilot
Club, a service organization for business and professional women, is made up of
approximately 1,500 women in the 33 clubs around the state of North Carolina."

A teacher at Pine Forest High School, the new president has served as

Cheerleading Camp and vice president of the Methodist College Woman's Club,
Mrs. Sykes is married to Mason Sykes, dean of men at Methodist. They are the

Academic honors for the spring semester at Methodist College have been
announced by Dr. Samuel J . Womack, dean of the college.

instituted at Methodist College for the first < time this winter. "To be eligible for

Announcing the appointment, Womack said "Dixon comes to Methodist

College next week for the North Carolina Annual Conference.
The Rev. Dr. Major J. Jones, president of Gammon Theological Seminary
in Atlanta, G a . , will address the evening session, Monday, June 3, at the
Service of Ordination for Deacons and Elders. Special music will be provided
by the Ministers' Chorus.
Tuesday evening, June 4, at 7:30 p . m . , the Rev. Ed Beck, pastor,
Warren United Methodist Church in Denver, Colo. , will address the Youth
Session. The anthem, "The Prophecy of Joel", will be performed by the Combined
Youth Choirs from churches throughout the North Carolina Conference.
Retired Bishop Ralph Edward Dodge of the Rhodesia Area will address the
Wednesday, June 5, afternoon session at 2 p . m . That evening at 7:30 p.m.,' Dr.
George K. Schweitzer, Alumni Distinguished Service Professor of Chemistry at the
University of Tennessee at Knoxville, will speak. Special music will be performed
by the Combined Adult Choirs from churches throughout the North Carolina Conference.
The annual conference sessions will conclude Thursday with the reading of
the appointments for the North Carolina Conference.
This is the fourth year that the Annual Conference has met at Meth^odist
College.
