Parents and Families,
Next Friday, September 25, is Johnny Appleseed Day. We
will do many activities throughout the day involving apples.
Please send your child to school that day with an apple. Reading/Writing Workshop
During Reading Workshop this week students were
introduced to two new Independent Work Time Choices: Read to
Someone and Work on Writing. Students will be completing a
Reading Response graphic organizer independently after this act
is modeled several times. We also wrapped up our beginning of
the year DRA’s. We are very eager to fully begin our Reading
Workshop time. Students were able to follow a model for
writing a project called Weekend News. Children begin with
thinking of one word to describe the events & illustrate 4 fond
memories. Students continued working on super sentences by
having a capital letter to start the sentence, and punctuation at
the end.
Math
This week in math we continued working on making 10
facts. We then took what we know from making ten and learned
how to recompose math facts into ten facts. For example,
students are learning that 9 + 7 = 10 + 6. They have been using a
variety of math manipulatives and ten frames to help them with
this process. Please note that the students have been doing a lot
of math work within the classroom. They have a math journal
that they leave at school in which they do their daily math work.
Word Study
Second graders were assessed on spelling their K-2nd grade
high frequency words. The expectation is that all students
should be able to read and write these words by the end of 2nd
grade. Your child’s teacher will share this assessment with you
at fall conferences so you can help support your child at home.
Social Studies
Students were introduced to their Leader in Me Student
Handbook this week and completed several pages about Habit
#1 Be Proactive. We read Amazing Grace and The Little Engine
That Could and discussed how it relates to being proactive.
