SPAFCS Receives National Honor June 9, 2006 UWSP News Release The Stevens Point Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (SPAFCS) student organization at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been honored with the 2006 National Progress Award by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The honor was bestowed on the UWSP student organization in recognition of its growth and activity over the past year. Five student representatives of the group will receive the award at the AAFCS annual conference in Charlotte, N.C. on June 22-25. Those representatives include Monica Erm, Appleton; Jennifer Koehler, Kaukauna; Heidi Kosch, Coleman; Ashley Louis, Amherst, and Sheila Nevienski, Eland. The students will share their chapter experiences with other attendees. Advised by Sterling Wall, an assistant professor of Health Promotion and Human Development, UWSP’s SPAFCS chapter has grown over the past four years by acquiring grants from the Student Government Association to involve a record number of members in local, state and national conferences. Kosch was an officer within the national association this year. The group is also involved in several service projects, including collecting backpacks of school supplies for delivery to school children in Nicaragua by the National Guard, Make a Difference Day and making clothes for premature babies. Future plans for the chapter include networking and mentoring programs with alumni and assisting other schools with their student family and consumer science organizations. SPAFCS exists to help students prepare for their careers through service projects, socialization with professionals and conference attendance on the local, state and national level.
