Instructor:

The purpose of this four-session study is to answer the question, “Is this
book, the Bible and its contents, reliable?" In the four, one-hour sessions,
we will address critical views of the Scripture, examines evidence from
the ancient world, survey how archaeology often corroborates the
Biblical record and considers the word of those who either were
contemporaries of Jesus or were closely connected to eyewitnesses who
knew him well. If it shows itself to be a trustworthy record of historical
events and God's dealing with man, then its all-inclusive promise to
sinners of salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ makes it the world's
most important book.

Nature and Geometry in

Landscape
The ground-breaking restoration of Jefferson’s landscape at Poplar
Forest by the Garden Club of Virginia has incorporated the meticulous
archaeological work by Poplar Forest’s Jack Gary and his staff; but it has
also tied this work to the documentary record of Thomas Jefferson’s
landscape designs at both Poplar Forest and Monticello, and to the
garden traditions of the 18th and early 19th centuries in England and
America. This restoration will broaden our understanding of Jefferson’s
approach to the landscape and illustrate that motifs that had
disappeared from the American landscape until this restoration.
William D. Rieley serves as the Landscape Architect for The Garden Club
of Virginia, a position he has held since 1998. In that capacity, he works
at the direction of the Restoration Committee to prepare plans for new
projects the Garden Club undertakes, and advises on projects previously
completed where adjustments or new work is contemplated.
We appreciate our partnership with the Franklin Garden Club in bringing

the order and opulence of English gardens. Here, a fragrance garden blooms with
Elizabethan aromatics. The sunken garden explodes with annuals. A walk through

of the knot garden, a collection of exotic plants once recorded by John Tradescant
the Younger, and a living exhibit of medicinal, flavoring and aromatic plants.
Then we’ll lunch at the Virginia Fine Arts Museum’s Best Café, a wall of windows

Travel with Encore Learning as we visit Hollywood Cemetery, a national treasure
located in Richmond! Whether you're enjoying a walk through the winding paths,
visiting the grave of a loved one or participating in an organized tour, this
spectacular outdoor museum has plenty of stories to tell. Much more than a
cemetery, Hollywood is a living story in stone, iron and landscape. Designed in
1847 by noted architect John Notman of Philadelphia, Hollywood has been a fullyoperational cemetery since the 19th century. It serves as the final resting place
for two American presidents, six Virginia governors, two Supreme Court justices,
twenty-two Confederate generals and thousands of Confederate soldiers. In
addition, Hollywood accommodates many deceased loved ones from the
Richmond community and beyond.
The natural and architectural beauty of Hollywood Cemetery sets it apart from
the grid-like layout of many cemeteries today. Known as a "garden cemetery",
Hollywood's paths wind through the 135 acres of valleys, hills and stately trees.
The skillful design, faithful stewardship and nature's beauty have made this
cemetery one of the most historic and beautiful cemeteries in the United States.
