What are the goals of PAR?
REGULARLY ASSESS WHAT WE ARE TEACHING
AND RESEARCHING AND WHY
ENSURE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF ACADEMIC
PROGRAMMING AND FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP AND
RESEARCH PRODUCTIVITY
ENSURE THAT ACADEMIC UNITS ARE OPTIMALLY
ALIGNED TO PRODUCE THE GREATEST TEACHING
AND RESEARCH IMPACT
PAR Standing Committee
• Standing Committee chaired by the Provost
• Includes deans, faculty, faculty senate
members, staff from key offices
• Meets regularly to both design and review
process and materials
• Reviews reports and make recommendations
• Final Decisions will be made by the Provost
Why PAR?
PAR Process for Academic Units
• Self-study process using guidelines that
include an external review
• Three Term Process in the Pilot Year
• Fall Term/Winter Term
self-study report
• Spring Term
external review/site visit
• Final Product
• Action Plan for implementing the
recommendations of both reviews and the
PAR Standing Committee. The Action Plan will
be monitored to ensure a successful and
meaningful implementation of the
recommendations.

Business & Engineering
Self-Study – Paul Jensen
CHALLENGES
• Interdisciplinary program with engineering
• Process seems designed for degrees that align
closely with departments
• LeBow degrees and departments do not
necessarily align
• Absent alignment, data on finances, staffing and
facilities is more difficult to obtain
• How to define B & E faculty?
Business & Engineering
BENEFITS
• Discussions with engineering generated ideas for
improving curriculum
• The process and growth in the program have
highlighted the need for a more formalized
management structure for the program
• Process enabled us to learn about the history of
the program
• Data analysis has provided a good opportunity for
benchmarking of the program
OBSERVATIONS
• Data support from central administration has
been crucial
• The value of the external team report
Physics Self-Study
Michel Vallieres
BENEFIT
• The PAR process provided our
department with an opportunity to
evaluate
the
research
and
teaching missions and identify
areas of improvement. It provided
a natural framework to organize an
external review which was long
overdue.
Physics
OBSERVATIONS
• Reflections on the various components
of the department
• Members of the self-study were
representative of each function
• Dept. Heads should be part of the
committee to provide in depth
knowledge of the program
• Initial discussions about the focus of the
review required much time
• Discussions of individual and global
findings took even longer
Physics
CHALLENGES
• The report must reflect the department’s
diversity in its structure
• Great difficulty to fit the various complex
functions of the department in the report
following the handbook
• Some release time ought to be given to
members of the committee

Is There Life After PAR?
• Action Plans will be implemented &
monitored following the prescribed time
line
• IRAE will provide guidance on plan
implementation and assessment of
effectiveness
• Student success factors will be monitored
to determine success of implementation
• Programs will undergo formal review every
five years. [see schedule]
Help With PAR
• Orientation for 2013-2014 Self Study Teams
• April 12, 2013
• Training on use of applications if appropriate
• AEFIS, BbLearn and related tools
• Support for Course Re-design
