Text: Calculus (ninth edition) by Varberg, Purcell and Rigdon
Course Contents: We will cover chapters 6-10 and 15 from the book. The weekly
course schedule with homework assignments is posted on the course webpage (available
from my homepage) and will be updated as needed.
Time Requirements: Students need to study about two hours outside of class for every
hour of lecture. More time may be required depending on your level of preparation.
Assignments: Each Tuesday, homework assigned for the previous week will be due by
the end of the day. Homework can be turned in during class or under the door of my
office so long as it is there before I arrive on Wednesday morning. Late homework will
not be accepted without my prior consent. I will drop your four lowest assignment scores
to calculate your homework grade. Problems should be clearly labeled and in order.
Solutions should contain enough detail for one of your classmates to understand what you
have done. While you are permitted to use calculators on the homework, be aware that
you will not be able to use calculators on the exams. You are strongly encouraged to
study and work together on homework assignments and to get help from the tutoring
center as needed. (www.math.utah.edu/ugrad/tutoring.html) However, you each must
submit your own assignments. It is extremely important that you completely and
thoroughly understand all the homework problems in order to be adequately prepared for
the exams.

note that all exams must be completed by the scheduled exam date. Make-up exams in
general will not be given, except in extreme circumstances, and requests for such must be
made no later than 2 weeks before the scheduled exam. In the case of an unexpected
necessary absence, please contact me as soon as you return and I will handle such
situations on a case-by-case basis.
Nondiscrimination and Disability Access Statement: The University of Utah is fully
committed to policies of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity, and vigorously
pursues affirmative action in all programs, activities, and employment with regard to
race, color, national origin, sex, age, and status as a person with a disability. Religion,
sexual orientation, and status as a disabled veteran or veteran of the Vietnam era also
are protected under nondiscrimination and equal opportunity employment policies. The
University seeks to provide equal access to its programs, services and activities for
people with disabilities. Reasonable prior notice is needed to arrange accommodations.
Students should call 801-581-5020 or 801-585-1813 (both are TDD). Evidence of

Relations/Dispute Resolution Office, 801-581-8365 (voice or TDD). If you require
special accommodations under the ADA pleas inform me through official channels early
in the semester.
