Camp Community College 2012 - 2013 Annual Report Another year has passed….and as they say, “time flies!” It is hard to fathom just how much progress we have made during that time at Paul D. Camp Community College. However, when we take the time to slow down and reflect (to “ponder” as I like to say), we realize that we have much for which to be thankful. This annual report is aimed at highlighting some of our accomplishments and successes and the many people responsible for them. Dr. Paul Wm. Conco President You will read about a generous donation from the Birdsong Corporation, which has allowed us to begin plans for a new Licensed Practical Nursing program at the Hobbs Suffolk Campus. Smithfield Foods and Smithfield Packing committed to a major gift that will support a number of new initiatives at the college. Additional funds from The Suffolk Foundation, Franklin Southampton Charities and the Virginia Community College System will assist with the support and expansion of programs. In January, we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the PDCCC Regional Workforce Development Center. We are very fortunate to have this gem right here in Franklin, where thousands of people have utilized a variety of training and educational opportunities in order to seek new careers or upgrade skills for existing jobs. The PDCCC Regional Workforce Development Center has served more than 300,000 people since its opening in 2002. Speaking of workforce, there are a number of career and technical program updates that are included in this report. Unfortunately, we don’t have room to mention all of the new initiatives, but we do highlight the latest news about our Warehouse and Distribution program, our new logging initiative and our work with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. We celebrated the opening of our Career Development Centers (CDC) and “Students Transitioning through Education Programs Successfully” (STEPS) program this year, as well. The CDC provides workshops and one-on-one assistance with job search, internships, and interview preparation. The STEPS program is a college success coach initiative created to increase the number of students graduating, transferring or earning a career readiness certificate. Another important step forward this year was the signing of an agreement with each of our local school systems to allow high school students to complete an associate’s degree or one-year general studies certificate while earning a high school diploma. This is an extremely important endeavor and a win-win situation for all. There also are a number of accolades to be bestowed upon our students, faculty and staff, as well as community members. Please read about their significant accomplishments that make us all proud. In addition to the LPN program that is under development, Paul D. Camp Community College has launched a Pharmacy Technician program (which graduated its first class in May 2013) and a Medication Aide program, for which the demand is expected to grow. Yes, there is so much to be proud of at Paul D. Camp Community College. But, we can’t do it alone. Join me in reflecting over the year, and thank you for your support in providing a quality education to our students. Sincerely, Paul Wm. Conco, Ph.D. President www.VaWizard.org www.pdc.edu 1/7/2014 12:47:29 PM Students in Action Action Philanthropy In Action Davis Awarded PDCCC’s First 40/7 Society Scholarship Bain Earns Chancellor’s Award for Leadership Laura Davis, of Carrsville, earned the 1st PDCCC 40/7 Society Scholarship, which honors the College’s 40th anniversary and the inauguration of its 7th president. Non-traditional students aspiring to change their lives through education at the College can apply. In partnership with the workforce center and Opportunity Inc., this grant will allow Laura and others a quality education. Laura also received a Career Preparation Grant toward her Pharmacy Technician Career Studies Certificate (May 2013). Her goal is to complete the certification exams and work at a well-respected pharmacy. The support she got from her son, mother and friends were monumental to Laura while she was continuing her education. She is a seven-year member of Full Gospel Kingdom Church in Franklin, and plans to give back to the community in some way. Philanthropy In Action J. Philip Bain Jr., of Ivor, received the 2013 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. Bain notes that it is rewarding to see the results of his contributions, “in terms of how it adds to the quality of life for students, how it helps them plan for a brighter future, how it improves the human spirit and how the effects are visible right here in my own little corner of the world.” Bain served nine years on the Foundation Board, and is also PDCCC’s 2013 Philanthropist of the Year. The Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship at each of the 23 Virginia Community Colleges is named annually in honor of the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. $247,000 in Grants Enchance Learning Opportunities Smithfield Foods Gifts $330,000 for Workforce Development Birdsong Peanuts Makes $150,000 Commitment for LPN Program Smithfield Foods President and COO Larry Pope touted the importance of Paul D. Camp Community College to the “educational and economic vitality of the region” when he announced Smithfield’s $330,000 gift at the 10th anniversary of the PDCCC Regional Workforce Development Center. He served as the College’s Major Gift Campaign Honorary Chair. Tim Schellpeper, President of Smithfield Packing, Inc., is a PDCCC Foundation Board member. Paul D. Camp Community College can fill a gap in educational and employment opportunities in the region thanks to Birdsong Peanuts. Through the Suffolk Foundation, Birdsong Peanuts made a $150,000 commitment to the College to build training space for a Licensed Practical Nursing Program (LPN). The Nursing Skills Lab will be remodeled and renovated. The LPN Program will be based at the Suffolk Hobbs Campus. This funding targets an ongoing collaboration between the College and Smithfield Packing for vital regional workforce training and education programs, such as: • Skilled technicians program/Robotics • Specialized “Technology Center” • Scholarships • Sustainability initiative at Smithfield Foods LPNs provide basic nursing care under the direction of Registered Nurses (RN) and doctors. They work in many settings, ranging from nursing homes and hospitals to doctors’ offices. To become an LPN, students must complete a one-year state-approved educational program and pass an LPN license exam. Many students use the LPN as a stepping stone toward becoming an RN. These dollars will be used to change lives and make incredible differences in this region and for Paul D. Camp Community College students. This collaboration between Birdsong Peanuts, the Suffolk Foundation and PDCCC is a healthy benefit for our region. 2012 - 2013 Annual Report-6panelsFOUR 1.7.indd 2 2 Community support allows the Paul D.
