No calculators will be allowed on quizzes or exams. Prerequisites: At least a C grade in Math 1010 (Intermediate Algebra). Resources – Tutoring Lab & Computer Lab: T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Student Center, Rm. 155 & 155C Hours: M – Th 8a.m. – 8p.m., F 8a.m. – 6p.m. (Closed weekends and holidays) Group tutoring is also available through the tutoring center. Grading: Grades will be calculated as follows: Quizzes 15% Homework 15% Midterm 1 20% Midterm 2 20% Final 30% Total 100% Grading scale: Grades will be assigned as follows: A (93-­‐100), A-­ (90-­‐92), B+ (87-­‐89), B (83-­‐86), B-­ (80-­‐82), C+ (77-­‐79), C (73-­‐76), C-­ (70-­‐72), D+ (67-­‐69), D (63-­‐66), D-­ (60-­‐62), E (0-­‐59). Exam Dates – Final: Thursday, August 2, 2012 from 12:30-­2:30 in LCB 219 Midterms: Thursday, July 5 Thursday, July 19 Exams: You will be required to bring a pencil and your student ID to each exam. I will be checking your IDs at each exam. If you don’t bring your ID, you may not be allowed to take the exam. Important! There are NO make-­‐up exams. Exam dates are fixed and will not change, make sure that you are in class and prepared to take each exam. There will be no retakes of exams… ever. Your score is what you get. Quizzes: There will be a short quiz each Tuesday and Thursday (unless there is a exam). Quiz questions will be taken from or related to text examples, examples presented in class, WebWorks problems, or assigned practice problems. There may be times when a take-­‐home quiz will be given (as a general rule take-­‐home quizzes/exams are more difficult than in-­‐
class quizzes/exams). I will drop your lowest 3 quiz scores. NO make-­up quizzes will be given. Anticipated quiz dates can be found on the course outline. I reserve the right to change quiz dates as needed. Homework: Practice is an essential part of learning. Observing someone else doing problems is VERY different from working problems yourself!!! I will try to spend time in class answering questions that come up during your practice. I am also happy to help with questions during office hours. You should read the sections and complete as many of the practice problems as you can for each section before coming to class. You will be responsible to complete six WebWorks assignments during the semester. The due dates for the WebWorks assignment are listed on the class website. Your scores on these WebWorks assignments will be part of your grade. I will not accept late WebWorks assignments, make sure that you complete each assignment by the date it is due. In addition, I will assign practice problems from the text for each section discussed in class. You can access the list of problems on the class website. It is important to do the assigned practice even though I will not collect these practice problems. If you don’t do the practice problems, it is highly unlikely that you will pass the quizzes and exams. Other Policies:  When you come to class, plan to be in class (turn your cell phone OFF, keep your computer in your bag, save visiting with your neighbor/friend till after class, …). If you are in class, I will expect respectful behavior. Examples of disrespect include reading a newspaper or magazine in class, social chatting with your friend in class, or text-­‐messaging your buddies during class. In all of these instances I may decide to ask you to leave the class.  Make sure that the written work you turn in is organized and legible. I will only grade work that I can read.  I will post your grades on Canvas. I do my best to update the grades on a regular basis and keep everything accurate. However, I would advise you to check your grades often to make sure there are no data entry mistakes. I’m always happy to correct any mistakes I’ve made. You just need to let me know about them.  If your have questions about any midterm or quiz grade, you must bring it to me within one week of the midterm. After that, you will have to live with whatever grade you got. 



If you have crisis-­‐level extenuating circumstances, which require flexibility, it is 100% your responsibility to communicate with me as soon as possible. The longer you wait to communicate with me, the less I can and am willing to do to help. You may take an alternate exam if you talk to me about it first and explain the extenuating circumstances that make it necessary. Needing to work, babysitting your siblings, oversleeping, or needing more time to study do not pass as acceptable. Getting in a car crash or having to attend your child’s birth, on the other hand, is sufficient reason to request to take an alternate exam (I reserve a right to ask for a written evidence of any claims you make). But, it is 100% your responsibility to communicate with me as soon as is possible, before the exam occurs (or as soon as possible). Talking to me after the exam will be sufficient reason for you to receive a zero on that exam. I reserve the right to make alternate exams more difficult than the scheduled exam. I will send information to the class via the campus information system. You will be responsible for this information. It is in your best interest to make sure your email address is up-­‐to-­‐date. Please make sure you do your best throughout the semester. Come talk to me if you need further study strategies. No extra credit will be given at the end of the semester. Do not ask me to make special arrangements for you to improve your grade at the end of the semester. If you ask me toward the end of the semester if I’ll make special arrangements for you to improve your grade by some means, the answer will be NO.
