Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences

Job Description

The University of Montana invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mathematics beginning August 2012. Position is responsible for teaching, research and service to support the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The teaching load will include courses ranging from introductory undergraduate courses (including freshman courses for elementary education majors) to graduate courses. The successful candidate is expected to advise students and direct dissertations in the mathematics education programs in the Department of

Mathematical Sciences and also work with pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers. In addition, successful candidates will be expected to develop a strong research program in mathematics education.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences has 21 tenured or tenure track faculty members. There are about 100 undergraduate mathematics majors, and about 25 graduate students working on masters and doctoral degrees in the mathematical sciences. Current departmental interests are in Algebra, Analysis,

Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Mathematics Education, Statistics, and Topolo.

Required Skills

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills including the ability to work with a diverse population.

Demonstrate aptitude for complex, accurate, analytical work with close attention to details.

Demonstrate problem solving skills and flexibility

Ability to work in a fast paced changing environment and prioritize multiple assignments to ensure that departmental goals are met.

Demonstrate ability to learn and apply new technologies.

Required Experience

A PhD or EdD in Mathematics Education or a PhD in the Mathematical Sciences with an emphasis in Mathematics Education

Demonstrated evidence of teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications

 Postdoctoral experience
