The curriculum proposals were delivered to the subcommittee chairs. There will be a few late proposals (level II). The November Faculty Senate meeting is a week early this year due to the Veteran’s Day holiday, so most of the consent items will likely be presented at the December 9th meeting. Humanities Professional Schools Science Social Science 38 18 50 21 Subcommittees should meet next week at the scheduled Council meeting time. Subcommittee Chairs will contact the members regarding a meeting location. The report on the Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) should be reviewed by the Council as a whole. The report will be sent electronically. Some of the recommendations may be applicable for IIP oversight as well. Business Items The following curriculum consent schedule was established. 10/13 10/20 11/3 11/10 Professional Schools Social Science Humanities Science The procedures were organized and given a number scheme (below). Many of the procedures are pending and will require Council deliberation. Chair Hirstein received an inquiry from the History department regarding whether internal changes to masters programs require review by the Council. The History Department is replacing field exams with courses. The Council agreed that it does not need to review this type of change as long as the program still adheres to the general Graduate School guidelines. Program modifications that change the basic structure and credits of the program would require review. The IIP Oversight Committee met last week and discussed the draft procedures, but did not review the draft Graduate School Information for students. The Committee needs to make sure this information is acceptable and consistent with the information in the procedures. A slight modification was made to the IIP Oversight Procedures – Under reporting (b) the following sentence was added: The student’s Committee Chair is required to comment on and sign the report. The IIP Oversight Committee recommended (4/15/09 meeting) a change to the application date. This was presented to the Council 9/16/09, but did not go to the Faculty Senate. The draft Graduate School Information for students language recommends students be enrolled for one term at UM prior to applying to the IIP program. This may need to be revisited. There is also a rule that students are not eligible for the IIP program if denied by a traditional program. Often students may apply to a program, but are better suited for the IIP. The Mathematics Department advises students in this situation to withdraw their application. This rule may need to be bettered defined as well. Good and Welfare Associate Provost Brown was congratulated on his new appointed as the Interim Provost. The meeting was adjourned at 1:00.
