Graduate Council Meeting Minutes
October 27, 2010
GBB 202, 12:10-1:00 p.m.
Members Present:, A. Borgmann, K. Canty, M. Ehrman, D. Erickson, J. Hirstein, J.
Hodgin, N. Moisey, J. Olson, C. Palmer, G. Quintero, W. Shields, R. Shortbull, S. Sprang
Members Absent/Excused:
Ex-officio members Present: S. Ross
The meeting was called to order at 12:10 p.m.
The 10/19/10 minutes were approved.
Communications

Chair Hirstein thanked Professor Quintero for chairing last week’s meeting.

The IIP Oversight Committee will meet next Monday at 12:10 in the Faculty
Senate Office, UH 221.
Business Items

The Humanities consent agenda (below) was approved. THTR 506 is pending
follow-up.

Professional Schools Follow-up: Forms were submitted to remove the G from
FOR 425 and 475. Therefore, the corresponding co-convened courses 524
and 575 were approved. The Schools subcommittee requested syllabi for the
400 level courses associated with the co-convened courses to assure the coconvened courses required higher level course work. If this is going to be
standard practice, the course form will need to be revised to specify the
requirement.

Social Schools Follow-up: IYFD 510 was withdrawn.

The Council continued discussion regarding review of the MIS and IIP.
Students should be included in the review process. Associate Dean Ross will
provide the Council a list of MIS and IIP students. Since the interdisciplinary
programs do not have academic homes, additional consideration is required by
Graduate Council, analogous to the internal review component of program
review. According to the Council’s charge it is responsible for supervising
interdisciplinary graduate programs.
The IIP and MIS should have parallel governing structures. In the past the
Dean of the Graduate School coordinated the administration of the MIS. It is
unclear who is currently responsible for the MIS. In the past the Graduate
School had discretional TAs, but this has changed. There is concern that if the
program is administered by the Graduate School it has an unfair advantage in
terms of competition for resources.
Further discussion regarding the future of the program should be postponed
until the Associate Provost of Graduate Studies has been appointed and can be
included. He should meet with the Provost to inquire whether financial
support is feasible, and then the Council can proceed with making
recommendations.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
