M/S/P, approve minutes of 4/2/12; voice vote, unanimous
New course, PHL 200, for GE II, E. ,1;, second reading
S. Crutchfield, for English: content of reading list & training of
instructor are necessary for placement into Lit. section; proposal
requires a “shift in the definition of literature”; either/or PHL
100/200 suggests enough overlap to place into same category;
potential confusion for students wanting an English course
R. Friesen, “weaving a text into a larger field” has different
context in PHL & ENG
E. Kraemer, For Philosophy: no hard & fast boundary between
disciplines; “General” education does not require study of texts
in a specific dept., rather study, whoever provides it; a dept.
does not control a single category; social/natural sciences “very
good at sharing turf” in other categories; various ENG 200 courses
“don’t do the same thing”
M (referred from previous meeting) to accept as proposed, failed:
2 yes, 5 against, 2 abstain; Philosophy does not wish to consider
placing course in another category
Bryan Kopp, for WE/WIMP:
23 WIMPs & assessments, “some are old,” from 90s: curriculum
& instructors changed; wants to do a status report & request
liaison/contact person to consult & update assessment plan or
get a plan “closer to what is done”; not asking for results/
data; will report in Fall; M/S/P, voice vote, unanimous
study survey went out last week on writing experiences at
UWL; analyze over Summer
Meeting adjourned at 4:48pm,
Notes compiled by T. Pribek
