New members were welcomed and members introduced themselves.
The committee is still short a member from Social Science.
Library Dean updates: o Dean Zhang distributed the Connections newsletter that informs donors what the Library has been doing. o She also distributed a list of assessment responses that will be put into flyer format around campus – We’ve Heard Your Voice. This informs the students that action has been taken from their comments. Professor Kate Zoellner and others created the list. o Budget / Library Collection
The Library has no budget reduction for 2015-2016 so cancellations to the library collection will be kept at a minimum. Currently it plans to cancel approximately $145,000 in ebooks, as well as some memberships, monographs and media acquisitions due to the 6-9 percent inflation on resources. MSU now has $5.6 million in collections compared to UM’s $4.2 million. The
Committee’s continued support was helpful during the last round of budget cuts. The Dean is very grateful and thanked the Committee.
The sector heads are nervous about enrollment. Although applications were up, enrollments did not see an increase. The final enrollment numbers are not calculated until after the second week of courses.
The library faculty are not in favor of a student fee to help fund the Library. One consideration might be fees for specific items like computers. The existing equipment fee is intended to include the library. Students also pay a computer fee.
o
RFP for new library system
The Library is in the first stage of soliciting bids for a new integrated library system with MSU.
John Greer, the library’s IT and System Head is leading the bid process (RFP). The goal is to get vendor’s prices first and then find the funding. UM’s current contract renews yearly and MSU’s
10 year contract converts to yearly next year. o Library facility improvements
Twenty desktop computers were moved from Level 3 to Level 1 to create quiet study space for students who use the library’s desktop computers. Eighteen new tables and chairs were installed in designated quiet study areas on Level 5 to accommodate the need for additional quiet study space. The Math Tech Learning Center on Level 1 is now open. It is equipped with
48 desktop computers, and comfortable tables and chairs. The Center is primarily for students enrolled in developmental math courses, other UM students can use the computers if there is space. The carpet on Level 3 was cleaned during the summer. And cleaning of upholstered chairs began during spring break and was completed this summer. Any new chairs will be easier to keep clean. o Library services to students and visitors during summer
The library hosted several sessions on how to access library resources for several visiting groups this summer, including visitors from China, Japan, and other countries. Library faculty members also participated in the campus orientation events to introduce students and parents to library services. o Library programming
The library and MMAC’s will host Shakespeare’s First Folio on May 9 – 30, 2016. A series of lectures will be planned during the exhibit. Julie Edwards is leading this project. o Innovation/Technologies
Glenn Kneebone, the library’s Paw Print Manager, is leading the creation of a production facility called One Button Studio on Level 1. This facility will enable UM students, faculty and staff to produce quality videos without needing complex training. The facility does not require staff. It should be available in October.
Professor Baldridge was impressed that she could access the Mansfield Library’s collection using her Overdrive phone app and the Montanalibrary2go. It allows you to check out books and audio books on your phone. It is great resource when you travel.
The meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
