EVST currently has a humanities distribution requirement, EVST 305 or 420, and a policy distribution
requirement, EVST 302 or 367, plus a 12 credit elective requirement in the upper division for majors.
The faculty member teaching 420 has retired and we seek to modify/diversify the distribution
requirements to replace 420 with EVST 430 Culture and Agriculture, which will be increased to 3 credits
by an accompanying course modification proposal, in the humanities and diversify the social sciences
through adding a social and environmental justice distribution requirement in addition to the domestic
policy requirement currently in place. This will fit well with the International Development minor that a
good number of our majors seek to complete and require majors to have background in what has emerged
as a very important field in environmental work.
In addition, our undergraduate survey assessment tool has identified addition of another environmental
science course related to the environment as a desirable program modification. We have long desired to
increase the environmental science component of the major, but have awaited assessment feedback to
determine if there was room to do so.
In light of the addition of more requirements that would bring our required credit total for the major to
42, we seek to continue to provide room for a double major, minor or focal area of study completion by
reducing the total number of upper division electives by 3 credits, from the current 12 to 9 credits.
