U 190 Freshman Seminar 1 cr. Introduces incoming freshmen to the world of university dance and contemporary dance as a profession. Justification: How does the course fit with the existing curriculum? Why is it needed? This course is designed to help first-year dance students to develop an understanding of the possibilities within the field of dance today; learn skills that will benefit the students’ learning experiences at The University of Montana and in the Dance Division; learn to write a dance concert critique; learn to conduct library research; practice healthy eating habits and dance-injury-prevention techniques; and develop a sense of responsibility. We are proposing this permanent class to replace a special topic course that has been offered in semesters past. Are there curricular adjustments to accommodate teaching this course? Yes. FRESHMAN SEMINAR-DANC 190 AUTUMN 2010 Professor: Michele Antonioli Office PARTV 184 Office Hours: T 2:30-3:30, W 1:30-2:30, Fri. 11-12 Email:michele.antonioli@umontana.edu Purpose: To introduce incoming freshmen to the world of university dance and contemporary dance as a profession. This course will briefly cover topics that new students pursuing a dance major will need to know to be successful. Topics will include contemporary dance history, dance injury care and prevention, writing skills for the dance major, library research skills as well as careers in dance today. Teaching Methods: The course will primarily consist of discussion, lecture and guest presentations. Requirements/Grading: Students will write a dance critique using the format required by dance faculty at the University of Montana School of Theatre & Dance. Students will research and present a brief presentation on a contemporary choreographer working today. Academic Misconduct and the Student Conduct Code All students must practice academic honesty.
