Position Description Type of Position: Seasonal Park Worker III Position Title: Natural Areas Field Technician Salary: $10.87 per hour – 32 to 40 hours per week (March – November) Position Summary: The position will assist the Natural Areas Coordinator and Assistant Natural Areas Coordinator in the management of the Natural Areas Program’s 10,000 acres within the Milwaukee County Park System. The position works on a wide variety of land management activities with special emphasis on invasive species control and volunteer coordination and training as they relate to ecological restoration orientated projects. Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to): 1. On the ground supervision of partnership activities as they relate to invasive species removal. 2. Field supervision of NCCC AmeriCorps teams, Student Conservation Association crews, and service learning students. 3. Assists with the implementation of grant funded projects. 4. Participates in Park People Weed-out workday efforts in spring and fall. This will require working on select weekends. 5. Serves as a field liaison between Milwaukee County DPRC and not-for profits, educational institutions, private citizens, and other government agencies. 6. Conducts monitoring of terrestrial invasive species and native plants within DPRC natural areas. 7. Manages new and existing Natural Areas partnerships through community outreach and education events such as public presentations, field workdays, and field trips. 8. Assists with maintaining the Natural Areas equipment cache and makes sure it is functional and in good repair. 9. Assists with the rearing of purple loosestrife beetles. 10. Assists with herbicide application, controlled burns, native plantings, wildlife habitat improvement projects, hiking trail installation and maintenance, and natural resource inventories. 11. Assists Natural Areas Coordinator and Assistant Natural Areas Coordinator on all other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: 1. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Natural Science, Natural Resources, Environmental Education or related field. 2. Valid Wisconsin driver’s license (class A). 3. Working knowledge of Wisconsin flora and fauna. 4. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs, traverse uneven terrain, and work in adverse weather conditions. 5. Strong written and oral communication skills. Preferred Qualifications 1. Knowledge of standard restoration ecology techniques, such as reforestation, prescribed fire, wildlife habitat management, and/or invasive species control. 2. Practical experience with ArcGIS and GPS software. 3. Experience working with external partners and volunteers to achieve shared goals. 4. Experience working for or with government agencies. 5. Experience with using standard ecological restoration equipment. Preferred Certifications 1. Wisconsin DATCP Pesticide Applicator’s license (Turf 3.0 & 5.0) 2. National Prescribed Fire Certification 130/190 3. First Aid/CPR Certified 4. Trailer experience
