Job Opportunities Bulletin JOB TITLE: Police Officer STATUS: Full-time HOURS: Shift Work LOCATION: Woodstock, IL SALARY: $19.88 per hour plus benefits JOB OVERVIEW: The McHenry County Conservation District is currently seeking a Police Officer who initially responds to public service and law enforcement calls, conducts investigations, and maintains patrol activities. Officers assume responsibility for patrolling conservation sites and seeking voluntary compliance from the public in an effort to develop a sense of pride and public responsibility toward the preservation and use of District lands and facilities. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Job responsibilities include, but not limited to: Enforces ordinances of the District and laws and regulations of the County, State, or Federal Government where violations are noted as follows: cautions, evicts or apprehend offenders; handles offenders, in a courteous and diplomatic manner; takes offenders to the closest Police or Sheriff's station; writes citations; and patrols underdeveloped areas for illegal poachers, trappers, snowmobiles, and other violations. Inspects fishing, hunting, boating, and snowmobile registration. Participates in special projects and details (i.e. surveillance, undercover work, etc.) Conducts follow-up investigations as required. Responds to requests from other agencies on issues pertaining to conservation laws and regulations. Provides information pertaining to site use, safety requirements and points of interest. Directs traffic, assists motorists, and investigates accidents. Ensures the security of District buildings and facilities by checking doors, windows, and investigating suspicious conditions, activities or person. Assists site users and the general public as well as provide District information to site users. Performs public relations functions including, but not limited to, providing information about various law enforcement activities to organized groups or the general public. Initiates records and prepares reports for incident, sick and injury, traffic or boating accident, juvenile and risk management reports. Makes court appearances to follow-up on the prosecution of violators. Completes arrest warrant, compliant and bond forms, responds to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis. Investigates crime and suspicious conditions. Responds to complaints and make arrest of persons suspected of violating ordinance and statutes. Checks remote locations to detect and suspicious activity. Watches for stolen cars, wanted or missing persons, and lost or runaway children. Collects, prepares, and preserves evidence and organizes testimony for presentation in court. Makes or responds to mutual aid request and interacts with other law enforcement officers (e.g. the McHenry County Sheriff's Department). Makes arrests and accompanies prisoners to jail or court. Enforces traffic and parking ordinances and statutes. Controls crowds at public gatherings. Performs minor first-aid (or calls for Fire Department paramedic back-up) when needed. Initiate investigations when deemed appropriate. Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations work, gathers evidence, takes photographs at investigative scene and may find and preserve latent fingerprints. May serve as property officer at the scene of a crime, protecting and preserving crime scene and maintaining the chain of evidence. Interrogates and interviews witnesses, victims, suspects, and other persons. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: Qualifications for this position include: Associates Degree or equivalent experience in the related job field or combination of experience and training. A current, valid motor vehicle operator's license. Strong interpersonal skills in effectively communicating with the public. Must be able to possess a valid F.O.I.D. card. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen. Must be able to pass the Illinois P.O.W.E.R test, a medical/physical exam, a written and psychological exam, and a background investigation. Ability to work as a member of a team and be enthusiastic about working in a natural resource environment. Must reside within 45 minutes of the County seat (McHenry County Government Center, Woodstock, IL) within the first six months of hire.
