Required Set of Skills:
You should be familiar with polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and
logarithmic functions and their corresponding graphs. You should also feel
comfortable working with the basic trigonometric functions and their inverses as
well as basic trigonometric identities.
Course:
In Math 1210 you will learn about the fundamental principles of calculus. Topics
to be covered include limits, differentiation of polynomial, trigonometric and
rational functions, optimization, indefinite integrals, definite integrals, and the
Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Students are expected to read each section of
the textbook that is covered in the lectures.
Homework: Homework assignments will be handled through WebWork (see course website
for more details), an online software that allows you to submit your answers to
homework questions electronically and get immediate feedback. Homework sets
are assigned weekly and are due before 9pm every Thursday. Late work will not
be accepted unless sufficient written documentation can be provided to verify
your unusual circumstances. Your two lowest homework scores will not be
considered when calculating your final grade.
Quizzes:
An in-class quiz will be administered every Friday of the semester at the
beginning of class. Each quiz will consist of a few problems selected from that
week's homework assignment. You cannot make up a missed quiz unless
sufficient written documentation can be provided to verify your unusual
circumstances. You may arrange to take a quiz earlier in the week. Your two
lowest quiz scores will not be considered when calculating your final grade.

Midterms: You will be expected to take 2 midterms this semester. Absence from an exam
will be excused only if you can provide verifiable and convincing evidence that
you have a significant illness or serious family crisis that will prevent you from
attending. Except under extremely unusual circumstances, you must inform me in
advance of the missed test. You are expected to promptly make arrangements
with me to make up the test. The first midterm is scheduled for Monday, October
4, and the second midterm is scheduled for Monday, November 22.
Final Exam: Your comprehensive final exam will be closed book and closed notes. You may
use a calculator if you choose. The final well be administered on Thursday, December 16 from
8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

Calculators: You will need a graphing calculator for this course.

Withdrawals:
You may withdraw from the class without consulting anyone until Friday,
October 22. If you withdraw before Wednesday, September 1 there will not be
any tuition penalty.
Tutoring: The Rushing Math Center offers free drop-in tutoring, a computer lab, and study
areas for undergraduates. The Rushing Student Center is adjacent to the LCB and
JWB. The hours for the Fall semester are: 8 am – 8 pm Monday-Thursday and 8
am – 6 pm on Friday. The tutoring center will open the second week of classes.
