***Remember: Hospital laboratories provide the clinical experience as a service. Education is not their primary
business. Health care is their primary business. They are investing their time and money in you as a future health

If you are not currently a member of ASCLS, you are required to become a member. You can apply
online at www.ascls.org under “Join ASCLS”.

Attendance:
During the Clinical Practicum you will be expected to be at the clinical facility for an eight hour day, five days
a week, except for holidays and a break during the week of Christmas and New Year’s Day. Starting times
will vary depending on the demands of each rotation.
4.
Tardiness and Unexcused Absences:
Carefully review the policies that will be distributed to you prior to the clinical experience. Tardiness and
unexcused absences will not be tolerated and are causes for dismissal from the program. Excused absences
may result in additional time added to the end of the clinical experience.
5.
Hospital Orientation:
Each hospital will provide an orientation schedule. Basically, hospitals treat you as a new employee, rather
than a student.
6.
Policies and Procedures:
You will follow all policies and procedures for the clinical facility. Failure to do so is cause for dismissal from
the program.

Cell Phone Usage: Personal cell phones/electronic communication devices are to be turned off and stored
during working hours and are not to be kept on person.
Use of personal cell phones/electronic communication devices is limited during work hours. Cell
phones/electronic communication devices should be used during lunch or break periods in a private space.

Health Insurance, Immunizations, and Physical Exams for Clinical Practicum:
All of you must provide documentation of health insurance coverage. In addition, each hospital will have a set
of “health” requirements. The SHCP Office or the Program Director will provide the necessary forms and/or
be in contact with you. You will not be allowed to start your clinical rotations, if you are not in
compliance.
9.
Dress Code:
You will follow the dress code as outlined by the clinical facility. That means no jeans, caps, lettered T-shirts,
frayed clothing, or open-toed shoes. Remember that you are a professional!
10.
Pre-Clinical Competency Exams:
The 6 month clinical students will complete the Pre-Clinical Competency Exams prior to leaving campus in
the summer.
If you are attending a 9 or 12 month clinical program, your Program Director will provide a schedule for you.
The exams will be completed during the first 1-2 weeks of your rotation. A minimum of 60% must be
achieved on each of the exams. Review your pre-clinical competencies, lecture notes, and laboratory
experiences prior to taking each of these exams.
11.
Segregated Fees:
You will not be charged for the segregated fees. This will amount to approximately $550-$600/semester.

Grades during the clinical practicum:
YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A LETTER GRADE FOR THE FALL SEMESTER COURSES.
Grades for the fall and spring semester will be posted online after the completion of your clinical
practicum (grades will be posted approx. 3 weeks after graduation).
13.
Graduation:
UWSP graduation will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015. Complete an application for graduation. Apply
for graduation online at: http://www.uwsp.edu/regrec/Pages/graduation.aspx. There is a graduation fee ($50)
whether or not you participate in the ceremony unless you paid a Matriculation Fee in the first term of your
enrollment. If you have a degree, you need to contact Registration and Records to add the major.
14.
Certification Exam Applications (for 9 month programs); see additional sheet for 6 month programs.):
Information regarding the applications for the MLS(ASCP) exam will be provided for you by the Program
Director. Approximate cost for the exam: ASCP BOC exam = $225 (2013 fees).
15.
Transcript Evaluation for Certification Exams:
The SHCP Office will send the transcript evaluation information and graduation verification to the ASCP
BOC (Board of Certification) after your final grades are posted. DO NOT REQUEST A TRANSCRIPT.
You will receive your examination scores once ASCP receives your transcripts (UWSP Registration and
Records will send your transcripts after grades are posted).
If you need the scores for an employer prior to receiving them from ASCP, you can request an unofficial
record from the SHCP Office (715-346-3766) or contact Susan Raab at sraab@uwsp.edu.

E-Mail and Mailing Address:
We do keep in touch with you during the clinical practicum. You can make this easier for us if you
will notify us of your address and phone number as soon as you know them. Each of you should
have access to a computer. You are expected to check your e-mail at least twice a week for
messages and notices. E-mail is our primary means of communicating with you during your
clinicals!
