Diversity and College Access

2014-2015

1.

Mission Statement

To assist in the student development of targeted multicultural students (African

American, Native American, Asian American with a particular emphasis on the Hmong population, and Latinos/Latinas), students that are self-identified as ‘disadvantaged’ (first generation college student, low income, LD, etc. also known as FGLI), students that are identified as nontraditional (24 years of age or older; married, divorced, widowed; have dependents; veterans; or stopped out of college for one semester), and students that identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning. We aid in this development with an emphasis on getting students connected to the University of

Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) and in supporting their learning activities.

To advise and lead campus administrators and faculty in creating a campus culture that is open and inviting to all students.

Indians Reaching for Opportunities (AIRO) and American Indians in Science and

Engineering (AISES). The other function of the Resource Center is to provide services to the 11 Native American tribes in Wisconsin, providing resources, leadership, and outreach on educational, political, and environmental tribal issues.

Solid Foundations: Outreach to first generation and low income students. Emails are sent to 225 of the most at risk students, encouraging them to be a part of Solid

Foundations. Services include one on one academic and personal counseling and free tutoring. Extensive use of MAP-Works is utilized to connect with students and get them utilizing success services.

Multicultural Resource Center: Outreach to all first year, new transfer, and reentry multicultural students. We provide one on one counseling, cultural events; student organization support, mid-year grade reports, and free tutoring. Alliance, Hmong and Southeast Asian American Club, South Asia Society and Alliance of Nontraditional Students.

Gender and Sexuality Outreach Services develops and coordinates ongoing training in

Inclusive Excellence for faculty, staff and students. We mentor students through 1:1 interaction and provide support for personal decision-making as well as refer students, faculty and staff to appropriate agencies and organizations to meet their individual needs.

We supervise and advise the paid positions in the Women’s Resource Center and Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Resource Center and facilitate/coordinate Safe Zone training for students, staff, and faculty.

Upward Bound: Upward Bound provides yearlong academic prep programming for 90 high school students that are low income and first generation. Services include advising, tutoring, and a 5 week summer program for academic support, ACT prep, and financial aid instruction.
