INTERMOUNTAIN FOREST AND RANGE EXPERI~ffiNT STATION Forest Service U.S. Department of Agriculture Ogden, Utah 84401 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS For their special efforts in providing valuable technical advice in the preparation of this list, the authors are especially grateful to Arthur H. Holmgren, Curator of the Intermountain Herbarium, Utah State University, Logan, Utah; Mont E. Lewis (Retired), Intermountain Region, Forest Service, Ogden, Utah; Dr. Stanley L. Welsh, Curator of the Brigham Young University Herbarium, Provo, Utah; Dr. Glen Moore, Authority on Cactus, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah; and Dr. Edward F. Schlatterer, Intermountain Region, Forest Service, Ogden, Utah. PURPOSE AND SCOPE This revised alphabetical list of botanical and common names of vascular plants that primarily grow on wildlands of the Intermountain region and adjacent areas has been assembled for use in quickly recording occurrence of plants in the field and for rapid machine processing of field data. Included are plants found in Utah, Nevada, southern Idaho, and Wyoming, and most Montana species. Where there has been a recent change of a long-used name of an entry, the old name is shown in parentheses after the new name. Likewise, the old generic name of a species may be entered and followed by th~ now-accepted generic name in parentheses. The list is based on phylogenetic presentations in recognized Western Floras and other publications relating to occurrence of species on wildland sites (see bibliography). Particular attention has been paid to the "Checklist of the Vascular Plants of the Interm~untain Region" (Holmgren and Reveal 1966). This provides the principal base for our listings. Kelsey and Dayton's "Standardized Plant Names" (1942) as well as a revision of this work by Beetle (1970) were consulted, particularly in assembling the common names. The "Check List of Native and Naturalized Trees of the United States" (Little 1953) was referred to for names of most trees. Many botanical names have changed since the first "Intermountain Range Plant Symbols" (1966) was published. These changes have primarily resulted from revisions of botanical names through studies by authoritative taxonomists. Benson's "The Cacti of Arizona" (1974) made it necessary to change the names of a number of cacti. Where authoritative changes have been made by botanists, they have been accepted in this plant list to make the list as current as possible. Several introduced species now widely planted, and other exotics that have become naturalized, are included. Special effort has been made to include a complete list of shrubs and trees in the Intermountain States. Subspecies and varieties have been shown where this is warranted. Many woody plants are being considered for use in artificial restoration projects for improvement of wildlife habitat, recreational areas, domestic livestock grazing, and stabilization of disturbed areas. Likewise, subspecies and occasional varietal names of grasses and forbs have been shown where current use warrants their inclusion. Spelling of names generally follows forms in the "Government Printing Office Style Manual." Some common names, beyond those used by Kelsey and Dayton (1942), and Beetle (1970) and those used by Little (1950), are shown when they are known to be in current use. When a reference was not available for a common name, the most widely used one was accepted. 1 GRASSES ARRANGEMENT OF PLANT NAMES Species are grouped generally according to growth form as (1) grasses, (2) grasslike plants, (3) forbs, and (4) trees and shrubs. The cacti are included with the shrubs, and the ferns with the forbs. Within each growth form, plant names are arranged alphabetically by genera and then by species within each genus. Alpha code The 12 generic names that have fewer than five letters are spe 11 ed in full in the code. They are: Acer., Beta., Gewn., Iris., IVa., Nama., Poa., Rhus., Rosa., Sida., Siwn., and Zea. SYMBOLS FOR SPECIES AND STRAINS The symbol for each species consists of the first two letters of the generic name plus the first two letters of the species name, all in capital letters, thus: AGAR for Agropyron arizonicum. If the same four-letter symbol should fit two or more species, numerals are added to the duplicates; this makes a symbol of four letters plus a digit, as AGDE2. Where strain or variety is shown, the first letter of the name of the variety is added; this makes a five-letter symbol, as AGINA for Agropyron intermedium amurense. If there is duplication in symbols for varieties, a numeral replaces the fifth letter, as ACGL2--Aeer gZabrum dougZasii. Since capital letters have been used in all letter symbols here, we recommend that capitals be used for all symbols written on field data sheets. This practice helps prevent mistakes in interpretation, both in the field and later in the office. Omissions and errors no doubt are present. Since a future revision .is contemplated, suggestions, comments, and notes on additions and errors are welcome. They should be sent to the Director, Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station, 507 - 25th Street, Ogden, Utah 84401. If the first five letters of two or more generic names are identical and would thus give duplicate symbols, a numeral replaces the last letter of any duplicate symbol according to alphabetic order of the whole name. For example, the genera Anemone and Anemopsis have initial Anemo- in common. Since Anemone precedes, it is coded ANEMO, and Anemopsis is coded ANEM2.
