The first question you might get asked
when you arrive here as an international
student is how did you choose
UW-Stevens Point? Myself, I was at a
student recruiting conference held by
UW-Stevens Point in my home city,
Changsha, China. There I met Brad, the
director of International Students and
Scholars Office on campus. I learned
that UW-Stevens Point has a very good
natural resources program so I decided
to come here. Now I am double majoring
in international studies and natural
resources.
I have really enjoyed campus life. I
was a CA (Community Adviser) in a
residential hall for one and a half years,
and that was one of the best experiences
I’ve had. Because of the job, I got more
involved with campus life and got to know
different sides of the local culture.
Speaking of getting involved on
campus, I’ve been trying my best to use
the resources offered by our campus. I
joined a few clubs, I volunteered, and
I attended a study abroad program
organized by UW-Stevens Point as well.
Last semester I studied in Germany to
study the German language. Some of
my friends call my experience as “study
abroad abroad” and I love this term. I love to experience different cultures,
and I was an exchange student in Finland
when I was 15 years old, so now I speak
Chinese, English, German and Finnish.
I love learning languages and I am
thinking about learning Spanish as my
fifth language. I have also enjoyed my life
in Stevens Point; Stevens Point is a cute,
friendly little town. I like to go out with
friends and eat at restaurants around here,
and no doubt my priority is Asian food.
Taking a walk either by the Wisconsin
River or in Schmeekle is also a good
option. Downtown is a good place to visit
as well, I like going to the second-hand
shop to find antique jewelry.
I have really enjoyed my time here, and
I am glad I chose to come to UW-Stevens
Point. I hope you all will enjoy your time
here as well.

Alumni Focus Xing and Sun Joo
“The starting place is very important, and
UW-Stevens Point is the right place.”
Xing Wang, BS CIS 2004, and his wife
Sun Joo Oh, are both enthusiastic about
UW-Stevens Point. Xing and Sun Joo and
their two children, Aimee and Andrew,
now live in Milwaukee, Wis., where
Xing is a Senior Software Developer at
Laughlin Constable and Sun Joo cares
for her family in addition to working as a
Korean medical interpreter. “We studied
English here and began university here.
We worked here, met here, married here
and still have lots of friends here. It’s
wonderful to be back.” The Wang family
was back on campus in August for the
American Suzuki Institute. Xing, originally
from China, and Sun Joo, from South
Korea, learned to love the peacefulness
of Stevens Point when they were here as a
students and are happy now to raise their
children in their adopted state. Welcome
back, Xing and Sun Joo!
Looking forward to
a great semester!
