Committee on Academic Policies and Standards (CAPS) Minutes for October 7th, 2011 Members present: W. Elder, J. Dziak, P. Miller, R. Gillis, G. Iguchi, D. Annino, E. Strauss, J. Boyle, R. Ragan Members excused: none Consultants: C. Burkhardt, T. Walls, A. Dittman, J. Von Ruden. Guests: 1. R. Ragan called the meeting to order at 2:15 p.m. 2. C. Burkhardt dispersed academic policies guide. 3. The committee reviewed the CAPS bylaws request from Faculty Senate. The committee tabled the discussion for a later meeting. 4. J. Von Ruden provided updates on electronic overrides. The committee is encouraged to have conversations with chairs and faculty members of their departments specifically regarding the electronic override process. Discussion revolved around faculty members overriding prerequisites as well as closed class and instructor consent. The Dean’s office expressed concerns about overriding things they normally do such as, admission to program and class standing. Jan will gather statistics on number of prerequisite overrides. 5. Roll call (8-0-0) to move to closed session as provided in section 19.85 (1)(a) of Wisconsin Statutes, when: “deliberating concerning a case which was the subject of any judicial or quasi-judicial trial or hearing before the governmental body.” 6. SAH- The committee heard appeal for exception to allow student to complete last 24 credits off campus. Motion approved for student to complete last 11 credits off campus. (8-0-0) 7. SAH-The committee heard appeals of the institutions course repeat policy. The committee will accept appeal to approve course transfer. The grade will not replace UWL transcript grade. (6-2-0) 8. Motion to move to open session. (8-0-0) 9. Meeting was adjourned at 3:25 p.m.
