First , contrary to the "" reportin g .. in the fir s t page article of tile April 13. 1973 Pointer , I will write editorials. Second , contrar y to "u nofficial comment"' from the las t staH. I have found a competent s taff and we a re putting out a news paper. Th e real que s tion however. is not whether or not I ha\·e found a competent s tarr or whether we can put out a newspaper. The real question is : " Where are we going? " I have been asked : " Is the Pointe r going to be turned into nothing more than a newsletter?" and " Are you going to be an administrath·e puppet? " My answer to both of those questions is a final and d efi nit e "" NO" . Rather than becoming a nev.-sletter or a puppet ol a ny si ngle group , the Yointer'1 first goal is to lry to be a source of in· formation about everything that pertains t o s tudents of this uni versity . While it is true that the campus will be given first priority in news coverage, that priority will not r es ult in a m e r e ··enlarged newsletter ''. Ins tead , the Pointer will try to keep s tudents in· formed of all the work.ings of the university and all that pertains to it. The Pointer will help those in Student Govern· ment who are learning to work witn and change the unive r si ty sys tem i n order to provide mature s tud e nt i nput into decisions made on all levels of the universit y . Anotner goal of the l"ointer is to be a s trong voice for the student. Not a ,-oice telling s tudents what they are or "'hat they shou ld be. You may ask : '' How are we going to be a voice for the s tudent'!" A difficult question, it will have to rest in part with the l'olntt::r s t.aff and in pa rt with the editorial policies. The staff is so far made up o( aboutJO individuals. The mos t interesting thing about them Is Ulat they ARE indiv iduals. Some may be found in a bar every night, whtlc othe rs may never touch a drop . Some will be making honors and a couple ma y have to work to s ta y off probation . PoJhica lly the y range from co n se r vative through moderate to radical . As individuals, I believe they represent a fair cross section of the ca mpus. Editorial Policies are much more difficult to defi ne. I realize that I cannot hope to satisfy all the varied elements of the university simulta neously. Uowever. tne EditoriaiPol · icies ha.\'e been designed to keep the Pointer as open to s tudents as possible while reserving edltora l rights. I hope that we will be able to accurately and fairly cover the various s tudent groups as well as t h e facult y a nd ad · ministration. I sincerely hope that during my yea r as editor the Pointer will be a service to the students of this university. I hope that we can turn it into an informative newspaper that will be picked up and read. Should yo u wish to speak to me or any of the J•ointer sta ff . feel free to drrop into the office or call at any time. I will be available to speak to any group by appointment . ,\ "'"' hlkr 1n :~eiitkmtc" ln'll has hun m;an~ st.....,lli tn 1M p tc"k t1hook Tht.•tl<'"" ~ldo.'JIIr;att'lilll rl'I:.!IH.Oilaso.'fllt'ilnfo~ freshnlt'fl~lld ~homuro'll.
