Muscatine Journal, IA 110-31-06 Nussle talks up Iowa's renewable-energy role By Bryon Houlgrave of the Muscatine Journal MUSCATINE, Iowa —Iowa Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Nussle made sure he had shaken everyone’s hand before he opened up on political issues during a stop to Muscatine on Monday. Nussle’s visit to the Muscatine County Republican headquarter office was part of a 99-county tour before the Nov. 7 election. “I came to say ‘thank you’ for all your hard work that you’ve been doing,” Nussle told approximately 20 volunteers. During his visit, which lasted about 30 minutes, Nussle discussed his positions on leading the nation in independence from foreign oil, as well as his priority of achieving economic growth. He also had positive things to say about renewable energy. “We’re already leading the world when it comes to renewable energy,” Nussle said. He commended Iowa State University on its bio-fuels research, and said that in order for Iowa to continue to lead the world in renewable energy, more research opportunities are needed. He also criticized Democratic challenger Chet Culver — who also stopped in Muscatine recently, visiting on Sunday — for failing to stand his ground when it comes to tough issues. “He wants to be on both sides of the deal,” Nussle said, referring to Culver’s position on TouchPlay, an Iowa Lottery game that the Legislature did away with this spring. Nussle, who opposes any expansion of gambling in Iowa, has claimed that Culver has a secret plan to bring back TouchPlay. Culver has denied any such deal, and during recent campaign stops last week, both candidates said they would oppose any effort to reach an out-of-court deal to end a legal battle over the games. On hand to welcome Nussle was state Sen. Jim Hahn, R-Muscatine. “I think he’s right for our state,” Hahn said, citing Nussle’s position on bio-fuels and taxes. “I know he’s very positive about fuels, both corn-based and soy-based,” Hahn said. Following his visit to Muscatine, Nussle’s bus tour continued to Washington. In the waning days before election, Nussle said the excitement is increasing. “There’s a lot at stake in this election, and people are starting to wake up,” Nussle said. One young man approached Nussle and gave him a hug. The hard-working youth, Nussle said, reminded him of his own days spent as a volunteer. “I really understand the value of young people getting involved. They are part of our future ... and this is good experience,” Nussle said. Contact Bryon Houlgrave at 563-263-2331, Ext. 317, or bryon.houlgrave@muscatinejournal.com
