United Press International 06-27-06 Sensors might help protect power grids AMES, Iowa, June 27 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists are creating a network of sensors to monitor electricity transmission systems to prevent power disruptions from cascading into blackouts. With the wireless sensors detecting suspicious activity at utility poles, the Iowa State University researchers say the system would be especially useful at quickly locating breakdowns. That could allow power companies to react in time to avoid widespread blackouts. The research team, led by electrical and computer engineering professors Arun Somani and Jerry Junkins, says the network of sensors might also aid power companies in quickly locating problems when severe weather brings down electrical lines. The project is supported by a $400,000 grant from the National Science Foundation and $150,000 from Iowa State's Information Infrastructure Institute. Copyright 2006 by United Press International
