JOB DESCRIPTION FOR TEACHING ASSISTANTS Teaching Assistants (TA’s) play an integral role in making the Summer Field Experience programs a success. It is, therefore, important that you accept this position as an important responsibility. Your job is to assist the faculty in teaching the exercises at during the Experience and to carry out other duties as necessary for an efficient operation. You are being hired to complete a job - the same as faculty. Therefore, some days you may work 14 hours, others fewer. You are expected to be present when needed and you should attempt to help the enrolled students understand and complete the exercises. This may require your presence to assist students in the evening. You will specifically be in charge of the following. 1. Class Equipment - have it ready, organized and in good condition when needed. You are responsible for everything checked out to students. 2. Vehicles - check gas and oil, keep clean and wash weekly, wax at the end of the session. Drive responsibly and within the speed limit designated. 3. Field lunches - check that everything is included and the proper number are present at Treehaven. 4. Books - same as for equipment. 5. Assist with operation/running of the Beartrack Lounge Snack shop at Treehaven. 6. Assist the Res Life personnel with rounds 7. Assist in setting up, conducting and grading tests and papers as requested by the faculty member you are assisting – signed confidentiality agreements are required. 8. Assist the director and stockroom managers as needed to conduct an efficient and professional program. Please note you will be expected to arrive and prepare for a Field Experience ahead of the scheduled time for students as well as stay beyond the time the close of the academic program in order to properly close down the Experiences. These positions look great on resumes, particularly if one is considering graduate school whereby experience as a teaching assistant will set you apart from others applying to graduate programs. Furthermore, these positions serve as excellent springboards to future summer and permanent employment given the level of responsibility they entail – they truly are integral to the teaching program and future employers readily recognize this.
