Associated Press 01-11-07 Iowa State extends smoking ban to outside campus buildings AMES, Iowa Officials at Iowa State University are getting ready to enforce stricter new rules governing where people can smoke on campus. A new policy approved last week by ISU's president will prohibit smoking inside a 25-foot radius around buildings on campus. It goes into effect tomorrow. The policy also prohibits smoking within 25 feet of outdoor eating areas, bus shelters and ticket booths. The modification of Iowa State's smoking policy comes as officials at the University of Iowa consider even tougher limits on cigarette smoking. This week, the University of Iowa staff council reviewed a policy that would ban smoking altogether on campus by 2009. The policy awaits review from faculty and student groups before it is considered by the university president. The University of Iowa now prohibits smoking within 25 feet of doorways. All five of the university's health science colleges will go smoke-free in April. Copyright 2007 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
