Approved COMMITTEE ON RESEARCH Berkeley Division 2010-2011 Annual Report This report summarizes the activities of the Committee on Research (COR) for 2010-2011. I. RESEARCH POLICY, ISSUES AND ACTIVITIES Guests: VC and AVC-Research Graham Fleming and Robert Price AVC Research Administration and Compliance Patrick Schlesinger and Office for the Protection of Human Subjects Director Rebecca Armstrong To enhance the proposal process, the committee suggested that a group of faculty meet with SPO managers periodically. Subsequently, the Sponsored User’s Network (SUN) was formed to “identify and address existing and emerging issues that are creating problems for UCB researchers.” SUN has eight faculty members including the COR and CAPRA chairs. AVC Business and Administrative Services Ron Coley COR members served on various committees including: Campus Technology Council Business Resumption Coordination Group Hellman Award Operational Excellence Information Technology initiative Research Compliance Advisory Committee II. RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM Changes to the COR Research grant program The Research Enabling grant award was raised to $2,000 (from $1,000) for 2010-11 only. In Spring 2011, the committee offered a supplemental REG to faculty who had applied and received a grant in Fall 2010, or who were away from campus at that time. The maximum additional award was $800. Emeritus faculty were eligible to receive the full $2,800, as well. Faculty with research support from other sources continued to be ineligible to apply for a Research Enabling or Faculty Research award. The committee raised the threshold from $25K, imposed in 200910, to $50K in direct costs. (A) FACULTY RESEARCH GRANTS (FRG) This program consists of competitive awards averaging about $4,500 to provide funding to initiate research experimentation, humanistic scholarship or creative projects. The following Table describes the number of awards and amounts awarded per academic subgroup in 2010-2011. (The departments included in each subgroup, and information by department is presented at the end of this report.) III. CONFERENCE TRAVEL AND INTERCAMPUS TRAVEL GRANT PROGRAM Because of budget constraints this year, travel grants were reduced to a flat $600 for all ladder rank and other eligible Senate members. A COR travel grant supports a scheduled presentation of an applicant’s original research or creative work at one of the following: a major meeting of a recognized learned society, an organized panel discussion, or an and conference/panel organizers. In 2010-11, 485 faculty were able to participate in conferences of importance in their research areas, share and exchange information, and present the culmination of their artistic endeavors. Total travel grant outlay was $318,435. Approved The intercampus travel program provides up to $250 to faculty and graduate students for short-term trips to: 1) use special research facilities (including the Huntington Library in Los Angeles); 2) collaborate with colleagues at other UC campuses; and 3) invite a faculty member from another UC campus to present a seminar at Berkeley. This year, the committee awarded $5,000 to 20 faculty to underwrite these activities. *COR SUBGROUP DEPARTMENTS BIOSCIENCES HUMANITIES PHYSICAL SCIENCES Environmental Science & Policy Management Integrative Biology MCB Nutritional Science & Toxicology Optometry Plant & Microbial Biology Psychology Public Health Vertebrate Zoology Art Practice Classics Comparative Literature East Asian Languages & Culture English Film French German History of Art Italian Music Near Eastern St. Philosophy Rhetoric Scandinavian Studies Slavic Languages & Literatures South & Southeast Asian Studies Spanish & Portuguese Theater, Dance & Performance Studies Astronomy Bioengineering CEE Chemistry Chemical Engineering Earth & Planetary Science EECS Energy & Resources Group IEOR Mathematics Mechanical Engineering Material Sciences & Engineering Physics Statistics SOCIAL SCIENCES African-American St Anthropology Economics City & Regional Planning Education Ethnic Studies Gender & Women’s Studies Geography History Landscape Architecture Linguistics Political Science Social Welfare Sociology SOCIAL SCIENCES II Agriculture & Resource Economics Business Demography Economics Journalism Jurisprudence & Social Policy Law Public Policy School of Information Faculty Research Grants 2010-2011 DEPARTMENT AWARDS AMOUNT FULL African-American Studies Anthropology Agriculture & Resource Economics Architecture Art Practice Bioengineering Business Chemistry City & Regional Planning Classics East Asian 1 7,022 1 4 25,650 3 1 7 4 1 6 1 18,000 41,710 22,345 5,000 43,000 10000 2 2 1 2 1 2 3 2 14,300 29,850 15,760 ASSOC ASST EMERITUS Other Senate Title 1 1 3 2 1 4 2 1 1 2 1 1 Approved Languages & Culture Economics Education English ESPM Ethnic St. Gender & Women’s Studies Geography German History Industrial Engineering & Operations Research Landscape Architecture Law Linguistics Mathematics Mechanical Engineering Molecular & Cell Biology Music Near Eastern Studies Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology Optometry Political Science Psychology Public Health Rhetoric Slavic Languages & Literature Social Welfare Sociology SSEAS Spanish & Portuguese Theater, Dance & Performance Studies TOTAL 6 4 7 3 1 59,760 32,000 47,001 23,000 9,000 3 1 1 1 1 1 3 1 3 9000 23,250 8,000 17,700 1 11,000 1 3 1 1 4,500 19,000 6,840 5,000 1 2 10,000 2 1 3 3,680 24,828 2 13,480 2 2 1 2 2 2 2 18,000 9,000 15,500 13,900 18,000 12,250 2 1 1 1 1 3 1 6,150 8,000 16,230 4,138 1 1 10,050 1 95 7,160 698,054 3 1 3 3 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 3 1 3 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 Research Assistantship in the Humanities Grants 2010-2011 DEPARTMENT AWARDS AMOUNT FULL ASSOC Anthropology 1 4,000 1 Architecture 3 9,000 1 1 Classics 1 3,200 East Asian Studies 1 4,000 1 English 4 14,650 1 3 Gender & Women’s St. 1 4,000 1 History 1 4,000 1 History of Art 1 4,000 1 Law 1 4,000 1 Music 2 7,000 2 29 4 ASST EMERITUS 1 1 1 Approved Near Eastern Studies Optometry Philosophy Political Science Rhetoric Slavic Languages & Literatures Spanish & Portuguese TOTAL 27 3 1 2 1 2 11,000 4,000 8,000 4,000 8,000 2 1 1 1 1 1 4,000 1 1 4,000 100,850 1 15 1 1 1 10 2 Research Enabling Grants 2010-2011 DEPARTMENT AfricanAmerican St. Agriculture & Resource Economics Anthropology Architecture Art Practice Business Chemical Eng.
