Approved 9/19/11 COMMITTEE ON RESEARCH Berkeley Division 2009-2010 Annual Report This report summarizes the activities of the Committee on Research (COR) for 2009-2010. I. RESEARCH POLICY, ISSUES AND ACTIVITIES Guests: Vice Chancellor for Research Graham Fleming, AVC-Research Robert Price; AVC-Research Administration and Compliance Patrick Schlesinger, and SPO Director Pam Miller; Professor Sharon Fleming, Chair, Animal Care & Use Committee; Professors Chris Ansell and Jane Mauldon, Co-Chairs, Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects; and Professor Jack Citrin, Chair, Research Administration Advisory Committee COR members met the systemwide Commission on the Future Research Strategies Working Group to furnish input to the Group in formulating its recommendations. Subsequently, the committee submitted a detailed memorandum in response to the recommendations outlined in the draft Commission report. To offset the impact of the University furlough program on younger faculty this year, the Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost furnished COR with a special allocation to offer summer research supplements to those who had a nine-month salary of $85K or less, and who did not have other sources of support or remuneration to compensate for the reduced income. The supplements were intended to help those colleagues who may have had to seek other options in lieu of pursuing their research or scholarship during the summer. A total of $671,079 in summer grants were awarded to132 assistant and associate faculty. COR members served on various committees including: • Campus Technology Council • Business Resumption Coordination Group • Hellman Award Changes to the COR Research grant program Faculty whose total research support exceeds $25,000 in the grant year became ineligible to apply for a competitive award including funding from external agencies, and internal sources including start-up. The Junior Faculty Research Grant was eliminated and combined with the Faculty Research grant. II. RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM (A) FACULTY RESEARCH GRANTS (FRG) This program consists of competitive awards averaging about $4,500 to provide funding to initiate research experimentation, humanistic scholarship or creative projects. In 2009-10, 335 faculty were able to participate in conferences of importance in their research areas, share and exchange information, and present the culmination of their artistic endeavors. Total travel grant outlay was $188,000. The intercampus travel program provides up to $250 to faculty and graduate students for short-term trips to: 1) use special research facilities (including the Huntington Library in Los Angeles); 2) collaborate with colleagues at other UC campuses; and 3) invite a faculty member from another UC campus to present a seminar at Berkeley. This year, the committee awarded 10 faculty and graduate students $2,390 to undertake these activities. *COR SUBGROUP DEPARTMENTS BIOSCIENCES HUMANITIES Environmental Science & Policy Management Integrative Biology MCB Nutritional Science & Toxicology Optometry Plant & Microbial Biology Psychology Public Health Vertebrate Zoology Art Practice Classics Comparative Literature East Asian Languages & Culture English Film French German History of Art Italian Music Near Eastern St. Philosophy Rhetoric Scandinavian Studies Slavic Languages & Literatures Spanish & Portuguese Theater, Dance & Performance Studies PHYSICAL SCIENCES Astronomy Bioengineering CEE Chemistry Chemical Engineering Earth & Planetary Science EECS Energy & Resources Group IEOR Mathematics Mechanical Engineering Material Sciences & Engineering Physics Statistics SOCIAL SCIENCES I AfricanAmerican St Anthropology Economics City & Regional Planning Education Ethnic Studies Gender & Womenʼs Studies Geography History Landscape Architecture Linguistics Political Science Social Welfare Sociology SOCIAL SCIENCES II Agriculture & Resource Economics Business Demography Economics Journalism Jurisprudence & Social Policy Law Public Policy School of Information Approved 9/19/11 Faculty Research Grants 2009-2010 DEPARTMENT Anthropology Architecture Art Practice Business City & Regional Planning Classics East Asian Languages & Culture Economics Education English ESPM Ethnic St. Gender & Womenʼs Studies German History History of Art Industrial Engineering & Operations Research Integrative Biology Italian Studies Law Linguistics Music AWARDS 5 3 2 4 AMOUNT 16,800 8,850 11,000 20,400 FULL 3 2 1 1 2 4,500 7,000 1 1 7 5 5 2 1 2,100 26,950 27,200 16,200 9,613 7,000 1 2 2 1 2,500 4,700 4,400 3,000 1 1 1 8 2 5 5,000 4,950 6,000 23,250 9,450 30,400 Near Eastern Studies Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology Plant & Microbial Biology Political Science Psychology Public Health Rhetoric Scandinavian Slavic Languages & Literature Sociology SSEAS Spanish & Portuguese Theater, Dance & 2 ASSOC 1 1 1 2 ASST 1 2 2 3 1 2 2 1 1 1 3 3 3 1 1 2 2 1 1 1 1 4 1 3 4 1 2 10,000 1 1 1 7,000 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 5,000 2,700 6,510 2,127 2,700 7,000 2 1 1 9,400 7,000 2,400 1 1 2 1,235 10,827 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 Approved 9/19/11 Performance Studies TOTAL 79 325,162 35 16 Research Assistantship in the Humanities Grants 2009-2010 DEPARTMENT AWARDS AMOUNT FULL ASSOC Architecture 1 3,880 1 East Asian Studies 1 3,500 1 Education 2 8,000 1 English 3 12,000 1 Environmental Science & Policy Management 1 4,000 1 Gender & Womenʼs St. 1 4,000 German 1 4,000 1 History 3 10,000 3 History of Art 2 8,000 2 Law 1 3,000 Near Eastern Studies 2 6,000 1 1 Political Science 3 12,000 2 Scandinavian 1 4,000 1 SSEAS 1 4,000 1 Spanish & Portuguese 1 4,000 Theater, Dance & Performance Studies 2 7,000 1 TOTAL 26 97,380 13 5 28 ASST EMERITUS 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 7 1 Research Enabling Grants 2009-2010 DEPARTMENT AfricanAmerican St. Agriculture & Resource Economics Anthropology Architecture Art Practice Business Chemical Eng.
