August 8, 2013 Dear Parent: I am certainly excited that your son or daughter has chosen to be a part of what I hope will be a challenging and rewarding course at Rowan County Senior High School – ENG II. Over the summer, I’ve been preparing to make this course a positive experience for all students. That leads me to a discussion of the major content of the course. You can expect that your son or daughter will read short stories and novels, autobiographies and other types of nonfiction, poems, and plays. The works come from a broad range of time periods and cultures. Through reading and analysis of literature, students will become more skilled interpreters of literature and the world we live in. In addition to reading, students will be writing expository, narrative and persuasive essays. Grammar study and vocabulary development will be an integral part of instruction.By doing this, students will be able to confirm, clarify, or challenge different perspectives with logic and new insight. Students will need the following supplies by August 12th to accommodate our learning: 1 ½” Three-Ring Notebook (that will be used for this class only) Loose-Leaf Notebook Paper (No Ragged Edges, please) Writing Utensils (Pencils and Ink Pens) Six Tabbed Dividers for Notebook One Plastic 2-Pocket Folder 5 Different Colored Highlighters (To be donated to the class for use in various activities) 1 Box of Kleenex 1 package of post-it notes (To be donated to the class for use in various activities) Finally, I’d like to ask you to complete a homework assignment. In order to get to know your son or daughter better as well as to help me understand his or her learning process, I would appreciate it if you could take the time to write me a brief e-mail or letter that tells me what I need to know about your scholar. I’m anxious to read what you have to say, so please send these by August 16. If you have questions about the course or your child’s work, feel free to contact me by phone at 784-8956 or by e-mail at kay.hedrick@rowan.kyschools.us . I am looking forward to meeting you and working with your child. Sincerely, Kay M. Hedrick
