Dear Parent:
I am certainly excited that your son or daughter has chosen to be a part of what I hope will be a challenging and rewarding
course at Rowan County Senior High School – Oral Communications. Over the summer, I’ve been preparing to make this
course a positive experience for all students.
That leads me to a discussion of the major content of the course. You can expect that your son or daughter will be learning to
communicate more effectively. Generally, students become better communicators through planning, organizing, researching,
developing and presenting pertinent messages . By doing this, students will be able to confirm, clarify, or challenge different
perspectives with logic and new insight. Students will need the following supplies by August 12th to accommodate our
learning:
1 ½” Three-Ring Notebook (that will be used for this class
only)
1 Stopwatch
One side-lined package of 3x5” white note cards
Loose-Leaf Notebook Paper (No Ragged Edges, please)
1 hand-held hole punch
Writing Utensils (Pencils and Ink Pens)
Six Tabbed Dividers for Notebook
1 notebook 3-ring pouch to store stopwatch, notecards,
highlighters, hole punch, etc.
One Plastic 2-Pocket Folder
MSU Library Card
5 Different Colored Highlighters
Rowan County Public Library Card
Hopefully, you can expect to see your child grow as a speaker and listener as the year progresses.
I’d like to ask you to complete a homework assignment. In order to get to know your son or daughter better as well as to
help me understand his or her learning process, I would appreciate it if you could take the time to write me a brief e-mail or
letter that tells me what I need to know about your scholar. I’m anxious to read what you have to say, so please send these
by August 16.
Finally, extra credit and/or bonus points are not given in this class. However, several times throughout the course, Invitational
Points will be offered. These points will not hurt a student, if not completed, but do allow the student an opportunity to earn a
perfect score for giving their best effort. The first two of these invitational opportunities are listed below:
Invitational Points 1:
10 points will be awarded if ALL of the following materials are complete and brought at the beginning of class on Monday,
August 12.

