2015 Trimester A 2:00pm Mrs. Amanda Wells Rowan County Senior High School A. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course enables students to develop an appreciation for their cultural and historical heritage. Humanities includes the study of beliefs, thoughts, and traditions of humankind as reflected in history, philosophy, religion, dance, music, theater, and the visual arts. This trimester will focus on the elements, purposes, and performances of dance. The study of the humanities promotes an understanding of the connection among the arts and their historical and cultural context. Students will recognize the arts as valuable contributions to humankind. A variety of activities will be blended to provide a connection among periods, styles, and cultures. Successful completion of this class is a requirement for graduation. B. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION The method of instruction will vary in this course. Students will be given access to information through textbooks, Prezi or Power Point presentations, performances of choreographed dances (teacher and student created), reflecting on professional performances of dance, and a field trip. C. COURSE OBJECTIVES By the end of this course students should be able to: Objective 1 – Understand fundamental concepts and terms associated with the elements of dance. Objective 2 – Understand the purposes of dance and why they are important to different cultures around the world. Objective 3- Be able to critique dance created by professionals and classmates, and reflect on their own choreographed performances. Objective 4- Possess a deepened understanding of the values and aspirations of dancers/choreographers and their work. Objective 5- Distinguish between the different dance genres and their characteristics. D. SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR CLASS Notebook with paper (for taking notes/quizzes/writing choreography, and as your hard surface in the choir room) Pencil or pen to write with Comfortable clothing on dance performance days Dance shoes or athletic shoes to dance in E. GRADING PLAN The weighting of course components: · Class Assignments/Projects/Participation/Quizzes: 60% · Mid-Term Exam: 20% · Final Exam: 20% Plagiarism/Cheating: Plagiarism or cheating in any form is prohibited and will result in disciplinary action. Student work that is suspect to cheating or plagiarism will receive a zero (0) for a grade. *Extra Credit: Extra credit points may be made available for students who want to improve their grades per the instructor’s discretion. Local opportunities of live dance performances will be shared with the class. Students are encouraged to attend such events and can receive extra credit with proof of attendance. F. CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT All rules contained in the RCSHS Student Handbook will be followed. Be on time to class. If you are late, you will be counted tardy. All cell phone/device rules will be followed. Respect other people’s property. Respect the school’s property. Be courteous to peers and to your teacher. G. HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN MY CLASS Come prepared with all materials needed Pay attention – follow directions Complete assignments to the best of your ability Study your work, notes, handouts, etc. Keep up with all papers, quizzes, and created work in your notebook Participate positively in class activities My hope is that you enjoy this class and instill in yourself a true appreciation for the arts.
