What is a Risk Assessment?
What is a Risk Assessment?
 Risk Assessments are simply a careful examination of what could cause harm to others. They are
performed to assess whether sufficient precautions are in place or if further precautions are necessary
to prevent harm from occurring.
What is a Hazard?
Hazards are anything that may cause harm such as;
Tripping
Falling
Contact
Flying balls
Slipping
Injury from contact with machinery or equipment.
 Members need to protect themselves from harm caused by “hazards” present in the activity. In many
instances, straight forward measures can control risks.
What is a Risk Level?
Anything that may cause harm is a hazard. We assign a risk level to these hazards.
 Low-Unlikely, although conceivable
 Medium-Could occur sometimes
 High-Could occur quite easily
Risk Assessment Steps:
STEP 1
What is the hazard?
STEP 2
Who is at risk from these hazards and what accidents may result?
STEP 3
Is the risk, low, medium or high?
STEP 4
What is already being done about this hazard?
STEP 5
What measure can be taken to prevent accidents or reduce the risk?
STEP 6
Who is responsible for taking these actions and by what date will this be completed?
