Excused: J. McCarthy, B. Wlazelek. Guest: T. Faust 1. Approval of the Meeting Minutes Motion by D. Lynch, as seconded by T. Stahler, to approve the minutes from the February 20, 2012 meeting was approved unanimously. 2. Old Business: Field Placements – C. Kreitz voiced concerns in the number of Pre-K, 4-8 placements that are projected for spring 2013. Many institutions are doing one, 15-week placement for clinical experience. The group discussed the pros and cons of offering one placement. J. Burnett will get feedback from the Elementary Education 4-8 supervisors and report back to Dean Garber. Freshman Text – The freshman text will be Kozol’s Letters to a Young Teacher. The same text will be used each year to provide cross-generational discussion. 3. Faculty Loads A system needs to be put in place so that LHE match instructor contracts. Discussion followed. 4. Plans for follow-up on SPA conditions Responses will be due this summer. Firm dates will be established at next meeting when Dr. McCarthy is in attendance. 5. PECT and PAPA Changes – Tanya Faust updated the group on the new PECT and PAPA tests: PAPA is for all certification areas effective April 2. If students started taking the Praxis prior to April 2, and have not passed, they can continue taking Praxis. Tanya will get clarification on the April 2 date for students who have not yet taken Praxis I to determine if they have to just register by April 2 or have taken the test by April 2. Rae Talley will be on campus on March 20 to discuss changes with students and faculty in Beekey 218/240. PAPA may be more difficult than Praxis because it encompasses material up to the College Level. PECT is equivalent to Praxis II – for the Pre-K-4 program and all Special Education programs. The 4-8, Secondary, Library, Art, Counseling and Music Education programs will still take Praxis II. KU will be a test center for the new PECT and PAPA exams. 6. TIMS Update – T. Faust updated the group on the new TIMS online certification application. The application process is improving in Harrisburg. There was a backlog in scanning applications, but this system has been improving. TIMS will be able to provide students with online updates and also be used as a recruiting tool for school districts. PDE is no longer mailing certificates. Students can print certificates from the TIMS website. T. Faust will send the TIMS PowerPoint to C. Kreitz to disseminate to clinical supervisors. 7. Cooperating Teacher Stipends First time cooperating teachers have been confused when they do not receive the full stipend because they have not attended a KU cooperating teacher workshop. C. Kreitz will emphasize that training can be done online via a PowerPoint, if they cannot attend the campus session. 8. Within Major GPA Calculation D. Garber asked each program chair to give to him the courses they count in their “within major GPA calculation” for their respective programs so that this can be relayed to Louise Male in the Registrar’s Office. 9. Post-Baccalaureate – Discontinue undergraduate path? Item tabled until next meeting 10. Grid Sheets for Website Item tabled until next meeting 11. College Distribution Courses – on grid sheet The group debated whether the “College Distribution” courses should be the same for all BSED programs. Some programs list recommended courses in this area creating a potential degree audit issue. D. Garber referred this issue to the COE Curriculum Committee for discussion. 12. Faculty Retreat Item tabled until next meeting. 13. PASSHE Academic Degree Policy D. Garber distributed to all a document highlighting revisions to the PASSHE Academic Degree Policy as of January 19, 2012. 14. As May Arise There was discussion on making the first half of clinical experience a prerequisite for the second half. D. Garber suggested each department put this through the curriculum process as a prerequisite in their respective programs. Electronic submission of course substitutions will be implemented effective immediately instead of piloting in summer 2012. On a motion by J. Burnett, seconded by C. Kreitz, to adjourn the meeting as passed unanimously. dhg:bls Cc: J. Cevallos C. Vargas University Senate University Curriculum
