If you sense a bad news discussion, when you must evaluate someone as less than acceptable,
you will want to use the following checklist:

Do I have all the facts?
Can I back up my assertions with facts and specific examples?
Do I know exactly what I am asking the employee to do?
Before confronting the employee, I need to know:

Is it an education issue?
B)
Is it a disciplinary issue?
C)
Are there any obstacles in the organization preventing good performance?
(Low staffing, unclear expectations or competing priorities)
D)
Does he/she know what is required?
Am I ready to speak about the problem without blaming and accusing?
Can I balance my negative comments with a few positive ones?
Am I committed to helping the employee succeed yet giving him/her the
responsibility and accountability for success?
