PROGRAM REPORT Name of Program: Training of District Resource Persons for Art Integrated Learning Name of Organizers: State Council of Educational Research and Training, Patna, Bihar in collaboration with National Council of Educational Research and Training, New Delhi Date: 12th to 21st August, 2013 Venue: State Council of Educational Research and Training, Patna, Bihar Number of Participants: 42 Co-ordinator from NCERT: Prof. Pawan Sudhir, Head DEAA Co-ordinator of the Program: Dr. Syed Ahmad Moin, SCERT and Ms. Shweta, UNICEF, Patna A ten-day training workshop on ‘Art Integrated Learning’ for the Capacity Building of District Resource Persons was organized by the Department of Education in Arts and Aesthetics, NCERT. The project on Art Integrated Learning was a collaborative effort of the Department of Education in Arts & Aesthetics, NCERT, State Council of Educational Research and Training, Bihar and UNICEF, Bihar. The participants comprised of teacher educators of schools and Block Resource Persons. The objective of the program was to provide the participants adequate exposure and training in understanding the role of arts in learning and development, and initiating the process of training primary school teachers in their respective districts. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Yameen, DG, UNICEF (Bihar), Mr. Hasan Warsi, Director, SCERT (Bihar), Dr. Syed Ahmad Moin (SCERT) and Prof. Pawan Sudhir (DEAA, NCERT) and the team of RPs from Delhi. The main objective of the workshop was to enhance quality of primary education through the integration of arts into the curriculum. Training was based on the package, ‘Training Package for Primary Teachers in Arts Education’ consisting of seven modules namely, ice breakers, arts in day-to-day activities, methods and materials of arts education, arts and arts education, integration of arts with other subjects, role of museums in education and evaluation (CCE). The participants were facilitated to prepare and present mock sessions on art integrated learning (AIL) in primary classes. They created art work using locally available materials, planned morning assemblies, gave presentations and performances. Special focus was given to the needs of inclusive classrooms through arts. The training workshop was supported with the viewing of the films from the Training Package to develop an understanding among participants on integrating arts with other subjects in daily teaching-learning process in the classroom. Special emphasis was given to “inclusive education” wherein arts played a major role in promoting learning and development among children with special needs. The field study done by the participants gave an opportunity to know about the traditions, festivals and local specific arts and crafts of the state that would facilitate the process of integration in education. The Resource Persons and participants visited different places of interest like Nalanda University, Shanti Stupa, Gallery of Arts and also attended the ‘Ganga Aarti’ at the Ghats of the river Ganga. Last, but not the least, would be interesting to mention the Independence Day celebrations- it was heart warming to the participation of all the participants and to be part of the Independence Day celebrations in SCERT, Patna.
