Program Title:
Computing Education for the 21st Century (CE21)
Web Site:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2010/nsf10619/nsf10619.htm
Description:
This program aims to build a computationally savvy 21st century
workforce that positions the U.S. to demonstrate a leadership role in the global economy.
Innovations in computing and, more broadly, information technology (IT), drive our
economy, underlie many new advances in science and engineering, and contribute to our
national security. Projected job growth in IT is very strong. Despite these very positive
indicators, student interest in computing has declined dramatically over the last decade.
The CE21 program seeks to reverse this troubling trend by engaging larger numbers of
students, teachers, and educators in computing education and learning at earlier stages in the
education pipeline. While interventions in primary education are within scope, the CE21
program focuses special attention on activities targeted at the middle and high school levels
(Estimated deadlines are forecast based on the deadline from the program’s most recent competition.)

(i.e., secondary education) and in early undergraduate education. The goals of the CE21
program are to:
• Increase the number and diversity of K-14 students and teachers who develop and
practice computational competencies in a variety of contexts; and
• Increase the number and diversity of early postsecondary students who are engaged
and have the background in computing necessary to successfully pursue degrees in
computing-related and computationally-intensive fields of study.
Type I proposals typically describe smaller-scale efficacy studies. Type II proposals
demonstrate implementations in which the interventions to be taken to scale have already
proven effective in smaller-scale efficacy studies (studies that may or may not have been
funded by NSF). Planning proposals support the establishment of new partnerships and
collaborations necessary to develop Type I or Type II proposals.

significant new innovations to STEM education, linked to a strong educational research
agenda, in one of four focal areas: Community Enterprise for STEM Learning; Current Issues
Related to STEM Content; Identifying and Cultivating Exceptional Talent; and K-12 STEM
Teacher Preparation. In addition, there are three types of Research, Evaluation and Technical
Assistance (RETA) project opportunities in this solicitation: 1) research related to
sustainability, or policies, or state plans for STEM education; 2) technical assistance for
evaluators of MSP projects; and 3) the STEM Education Resource Collaboratory.
Deadline:
Mar. 5, 2012, and Dec. 18, 2012
(Estimated deadlines are forecast based on the deadline from the program’s most recent competition.)

Research Coordination Networks
Web Site:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2011/nsf11531/nsf11531.htm
Description:
The goal of this program is to advance a field or create new directions
in research or education. Groups of investigators will be supported to communicate and
coordinate their research, training and educational activities across disciplinary,
organizational, geographic and international boundaries. Innovative ideas for implementing
novel networking strategies, collaborative technologies, and development of community
standards for data and meta-data are especially encouraged. Proposals are offered on two
tracks: Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability (SEES); and Undergraduate
Biology Education (UBE), with the latter accepting one-year incubator track proposals to
assist initial networking efforts in developing a UBE track proposal.
Deadline:
Feb. 3, 2012, for SEES track proposals
June 15, 2012, for UBE and UBE incubator track proposals

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
Web Site:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2009/nsf09598/nsf09598.htm
Description:
REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research
programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. REU projects
feature high-quality interaction of students with faculty and/or other research mentors and
access to appropriate facilities and professional development opportunities.
Deadline:
Aug. 22, 2012

Program Title:
Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI)
Web Site:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2000/nsf00144/nsf00144.htm
Description:
The Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) activity supports
research by faculty members of predominantly undergraduate institutions through the funding
of 1) individual and collaborative research projects; 2) the purchase of shared-use research
instrumentation; and 3) Research Opportunity Awards for work with NSF-supported
investigators at other institutions. All NSF directorates participate in the RUI activity. RUI
proposals are evaluated and funded by the NSF programs in the disciplinary areas of the
proposed research.
Deadline:
Proposals accepted anytime.

Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics
Talent Expansion Program (STEP)
Web Site:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2011/nsf11550/nsf11550.htm
Description:
The STEP program seeks to increase the number of students in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Type 1 proposals should aim to adapt and
implement best practices leading to an increase in the number of students obtaining STEM
degrees at institutions with baccalaureate degree programs; or completing associate degrees in
STEM fields or completing credits toward transfer to a baccalaureate degree program in
STEM fields at community colleges. Type 2 proposals should represent educational research
on factors affecting associate or baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM.
Deadline:
Sept. 25, 2012

Program Title:
Transforming Undergraduate Education in Science, Technology,
Engineering & Mathematics (TUES)
Web Site:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2010/nsf10544/nsf10544.htm
Description:
Formerly titled Course, Curriculum & Laboratory Improvement, the
TUES program supports efforts to create, adapt, and disseminate new learning materials and
teaching strategies to reflect advances both in STEM disciplines and in what is known about
teaching and learning. It funds projects that develop faculty expertise, implement educational
innovations, assess learning and evaluate innovations, prepare K-12 teachers, or conduct
research on STEM teaching and learning; projects that further the work of the program itself,
for example, synthesis and dissemination of findings across the program; and projects that
represent different stages of development, ranging from small, exploratory investigations to
large, comprehensive projects.
See project categories: Type 1 Projects are expected to be significant enough to
contribute to understanding undergraduate STEM education; Type 2 Projects will typically
address more than one program component, or, if they focus on a single component, will
address it at a scale that goes well beyond a single institution; Type 3 Projects are intended to
support large-scale efforts; TUES Central Resource Projects assume responsibility for
leadership and implementation of activities that sustain the TUES community as it works to
transform undergraduate STEM education.
Deadline:
May 28, 2012, for Type 1 proposals
Jan. 14, 2013, for Type 2 and Type 3 proposals and TUES Central Resource
Project proposals.
Note:
TUES Central Resource Project proposals for small, focused workshops may
be submitted at any time after consulting with an NSF program officer.

This program supports innovative peace-building projects managed by
nonprofit organizations, including educational institutions, research institutions, and civil
society organizations. Areas in which community colleges might find the most success
include developing curricula and texts; conducting training, symposia, and continuing
education programs; international education programs or student abroad programs; and
undertaking public information efforts. While an international partner is not required,
applicants are encouraged to partner with an organization that has an international reach so
that some activities in the proposed program can occur outside the U.S. Information about the
upcoming competition is expected in spring 2012.
