2. Exercises- will include daily supervised stretching, strengthening, fitness exercises, and hydrotherapy on most days. All exercises are safe and will be tailored to a level that you can cope with. The programme aims to help you understand persisting pain and to introduce a manageable exercise programme. It will also help you to plan how to return to activities that you have stopped. Although it is not designed to cure your pain, most people report that they improve. The Programme Each group will have a maximum of 10 people. There will be 9 sessions over a period of 3 weeks Mon & Weds. 09.15 – 1530 Tues. 09.15 – 1500 We will notify you of any changes to this proposed timetable. During the programme we plan to: Help you explore new ways of managing persisting pain Improve your confidence Help you understand why pain persists. Enjoy a better quality of life. Increase your general fitness Reduce frustration and anxiety How will we know if I have improved? At the beginning and the end of the programme we will use questionnaires and activities to measure how you are doing. To give us a chance to catch up and discuss your progress, there is a review during the year after the programme (roughly at 3 months). Each group comes back together for 2 hours at the review appointment. Who will I see on the programme? The majority of the programme will be run by physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants. However programmes will also have talks from guest speakers wherever possible such as the Disability Employment Advisor. Can anyone else attend? Relatives and friends are encouraged to attend the programme for one day at the end of the second week usually the 2nd week and for any of the reassessments after the programme. What do I need to bring with me? Comfy clothes to exercise in Comfortable shoes The handbook you are given on the programme Glasses if you use them Swimming costume Any medication that you would normally take during the day Let us know if: You are seen by another specialist You have changes in your general health Your situation improves and you no longer need to come. If your circumstances change and you can no longer attend for 3 weeks. The programme content: The programme usually consists of a combination of the following activities. These are normally done both individually and in a group setting. 1. Discussions – these are an important focus of the programme and will include topics such as: How to increase activity Exercise Understanding pain which persists Sleep Medication Employment advice Exploring common worries and concerns The role and limitations of investigations Plans for possible set backs How family can help Posture and lifting Leisure and recreation
