Brass is a uniform mixture of zinc and copper. If 1000 cm3 of brass weighs 8.4
kg and is 25% by weight zinc.

7. I am going to mix 50 g of ethanol (molar mass 46.1) with 50 of acetone (molar mass
58.1) If the vapor pressures of these two liquids are 45 torr and 183 torr, respectively
what should the vapor pressure of the mixture be if they form an ideal solution?
Mole Ethanol = 50 g / (46.1g/mol) = 1.087 mol
Mole Acetone = 50 g/(58.1 g/mol) = .861 mol

Would the vapor pressure of the solution get higher or lower if the solution got colder
upon mixing? Why?
If the solution got colder it had a positive ÄHSolution indicating that the solvent and
solute have poor interactions with each other. When that happens the VP of the
solution will typically become higher (+ deviation from Raoult’s law) because the
molecules will try to escape into the vapor to avoid the solution.
8. When you make salt water taffy you add enough sugar, corn syrup and butter to
water to raise the boiling point from 122 oC. What is the molality of the solution at this
point? (The boiling point elevation constant of water is 0.51 oC@kg/mol)
