2. One of the advertisements I keep seeing on television is for the asthma drug,
Symbicort. Symbicort is actually a combination of two drugs, Budesonide and
Fomoterol. Below is the carbon skeleton of Budesonide.
A.) Complete this structure by showing all lone pairs of electrons.
B.) How many carbons in this structure are sp hybridized? __0____
C.) How many carbons in this structure are sp2 hybridized? __6____
D.) How many carbons in this structure are sp3 hybridized? __18____
E.) Is this compound polar or nonpolar? _nonpolar_____
You need to add 2 lone
pairs to each O atom
3. Below are some ionic diatomic molecules that may or may not exist. Show the ladder
of filled and unfilled molecular orbitals then use this diagram to answer the following
questions:
A.) What is the bond order for this compound?.
B.) Which compound is the most stable? The least stable?
C.) Is this compound attracted to, or repelled from, a magnetic field?

4. What is the difference between?
An atomic orbital and a molecular orbital
In an atomic orbital the electrons are restricted to a region around a single atom. In a
molecular orbital the electron orbital is shared between one or more atoms.
Diamagnetic and Paramagnetic
Diamagnetic is a material that is slightly repelled by a magnetic field because all of its
electrons are paired up. A paramagnetic material is attracted to a magnetic field
because it has one or more unpaired electrons.
An sp3 and a d2sp3 hybridized orbital
An sp3 orbital are four orbitals in a tetrahedral shape that occur when a single s and 3 p
orbitals are hybridized together. d2sp3 orbitals are 6 orbitals arranged in an octahedral
that occurs when one s, three p and 2 d orbitals are hybridized together.
5. Give the proper IUPAC names for the following compounds:
2,3,3-trimethylpentane
2-amino-1-ethyl-3-methylbenzene
2-bromo-2-methylpropanal
cis 1-iodo-3-methyl-1-butene
6. Give a chemical reaction with reactant, product and any other necessary chemicals
or conditions for each of the following types of organic reactions:
A substitution reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon
An addition reaction of an alkyne
An addition reaction used in a polymerization
A combustion reaction of an alkane
CH4(g) + 2 O2(g) 6 CO2 (g) + 2H2O(g)
7. Below is the structure of the other compound Symbicort, Fomoterol. Circle and
identify all the different functional groups in this compound.
8. The three major biopolymers are proteins, complex carbohydrates, and nucleic acids.
What do the monomers of these three polymers look like? (You do not need an exactly
correct chemical structure, just a reasonable approximation of the structure.)

Monomer
Protein
Amino Acid
Carbohydrate Simple sugar
