Exam II Study Guide
Instructions: Put the last four digits of your ISU ID number on each page of your test. Separately
staple the three parts of the exam: concepts, scale construction, and survey construction.
A. Concepts. (60 points) For each of the following ten terms,
a. give a brief (2 - 3 lines) explanation of the concept as used in research (Don’t use the term in
the definition!). (4 points)
b. give a brief (1 - 2 lines) example of the concept in research methods used in human
development and family studies or hotel/restaurant institution management. (2 points)

Analysis and Application. You may outline your answers to these questions; however, be sure that
your outline is understandable! Begin B and C on separate pages.
Problems B & C are research design problems requiring you to apply what you have learned
about research design to design a study or to critique a research design for a qualitative study,
an experimental study, or an evaluation study (my choice). These problems will require you to
apply information about all aspects of the internal and external validity of a study. You should be
familiar with the explanation and application of the parallel terms on p. 337. You should also be
familiar with explanation and application of threats to validity discussion on pp. 511 to 524. You
will be expected not only to identify the problems in a design, but suggest solutions for those
problems.
Reminders:
•
Check to be sure that the last four digits of your ISU ID number are on each page
of your test.
•
Staple parts A, B, and C separately.
