Chabot College Signage Project
Summary of Possible Changes to Building Numbers & Signs
Scott Hildreth
October 2014
Summary
Along with the installation of new campus maps and waypoints signs, the Signage Project gives us the
opportunity to improve the ability of students and visitors to identify current buildings, and clarify key
functions usually served by certain buildings. In particular, we can:
-
Remove outdated lettering on glass transoms above many buildings (eg: “Building 100
Library/Media Services” will no longer match all that the area includes).
-
Update outdated small square brass plaques (with Braille) present near most doorways (eg.
“Building 1800 - Chemistry Computer Science” plaques are still present, even though the area
now serves all of the STEM areas, and includes physics labs and student study rooms).
-
Add larger building numbers on the sides of many buildings that are not easily identified when
approached from key directions that students and visitors will predictably travel (eg. Building
4000 has no obvious numbers anywhere; Building 700 has paper signs in the windows but on
obvious numbers consistent with campus standards.)
-
Take advantage of larger areas on some key buildings to situate larger signs that may improve
visibility of the college to passers-by on Hesperian Blvd, as well as welcome visitors to the
college. (eg. a large “Chabot College” sign could be added across the side of Building 700
facing Hesperian, and “Welcome to Chabot College” could be added along the top of the
archway spanning the major campus walkway between buildings 800 and 900 approaching the
Grand Court.
A careful inspection of each building on campus was undertaken, and a sketch was made to identify the
locations of the plaques, transom lettering, current building numbers, and locations where additional
numbers might be helpful. The sketches are available as a PDF, linked to the Facilities Webpage.
The table on the next page summarizes the information from each sketch. Priority should be given to:
-
Buildings 700, 400, and 4000 (which have no visible permanent numbers at all;
Building 1200 doorways which have no visible signs or numbers
Adding ADA-compatible signs where not present, and changing incorrect signs

Services”
(3) over doors facing
200, 500, and 2200
(4) near doors
facing 200, 500
(2), and 2200
There is no # on Bldg visible from the
Grand Court. We could use large gold #s
similar to those elsewhere on the facade
facing the court.
200
(1) over main doors
facing 100
(2) near main
door and NE door
near main
campus entrance
There needs to be some large visible # at
the entrance; currently only a small gold
“200” is present on one column close to
2300. We could also add large #s on the
side facing the Bookstore; nothing
identifies the building from that direction
coming next to the cafeteria.
300
“300 Business
Classrooms/Labs”
(3) over main doors
facing 100, both
downstairs and
upstairs, and over door
facing 500
(3) near all three
main doors
(upstairs,
downstairs, and
facing 500)
There are gold building #s visible already
from 3 locations; however, the large wall
facing the campus entrance, bus circle,
and building 200 is not well identified, and
numbers could be added at the northern
corner of the building to be much more
visible from the parking lot.
400
(none)
(none exist; must
add)
Large numbers clearly visible facing the
walkway from 100 currently only papers
signs are present. Also consider numbers
over the walls facing the bus circle and
parking lot B, and the wall facing building
700. Small permanent door signs are
needed over the two doors facing
Hesperian (currently marked with paper
only.)
500
“500 Social Science”
(3) over main doors
facing 100, both
downstairs and
upstairs, and over door
facing 700
(3) near all three
main doors
(upstairs,
downstairs, and
facing 700)
One additional set of large Bldg #s could
be added on the face of 500 nearest the
IOB (400) and 700; currently that wall has
no numbers. The numbers facing 300 are
obscured by trees; the numbers facing 700
and the assessment center are small and
high and not easily visible
700
(none)
(none exist; must
add)
Large numbers are needed on at least 3
walls (esp. facing the Grand Court), as well
as over the main doorway near the
courtyard facing 800.

Additional Comments
Additional space on the large wall facing
Hesperian might be perfect for a “CHABOT
COLLEGE” sign. This is arguably the most
important building for our students on
campus, and it deserves to be easily
identified from many directions.
700S
(none)
(none exist; must
add)
Great signage on the ground around this
building; we need to add more clearly
visible room #s on the door facing the dropoff circle (for Rm 727, where many key
services are located); we might also want
more visible signage for the Event Center
on the side facing Hesperian.
800
(3) over main doors
facing Grand Court,
both downstairs and
upstairs, and over door
facing 700
(3) near all three
main doors
(upstairs,
downstairs, and
facing 700)
There are gold building #’s visible from all
four corners now, but nothing facing the
drop-off circle and 700S. Additionally, we
could consider adding #s on the side of
800 facing the courtyard and 700, where
many students congregate.
900
“900 Humanities”
(1) over main doors
facing Grand Court
(2) one at front
door; second at
inside hallway
separating 900
and 1000
Recommend adding Building #s at the
corner of 900 and 1000 along the main
artery coming from the parking lot. The
current gold numbers at the corners near
the Grand Court are OK, but mid-way down
the walkway you can’t see that the building
is 900. And you can’t easily tell that you
can access classrooms through that door,
so perhaps a “900 Classrooms” signs
might be useful there, too?
1000
“1000 Art Gallery”
is present over the
doorway facing 800
along the walkway.
(none exist)
Larger Bldg. #s would benefit the sides of
1000 closest to the parking lot as students
approach the campus. Old door and
building signs abound on this facility, with
many doors having two # signs, one old,
and one newer (with Braille). The door
facing 1100/1200 has a custom “1000 Art
Gallery” sign not consistent with other
campus signage.

1100
“Humanities Faculty
Offices” (1) over main
entrance facing Grand
Court
(3) over all three
doors, facing
1200, 1000, and
Grant Court
The building can’t be easily identified from
the parking lot because of landscaping. It
might be possible to add larger gold #s on
that facade, but this may not be necessary
given other good waypoint signs and SOTA
marquee. Already some small old door
signs on this building.
1200
(none)
(2) at Eastern
corner of building
close to 1100
There are no building or door # signs
visible over the two main student entrances
to this facility, facing 1100 and the SOTA
courtyard. There could be a larger Bldg #
on the side facing 1300 and the Grand
Court, as well as the side closest to Depot
Road parking. Trees currently obscure
one of the two “1200” signs close to the
parking lot.
Doors around the building have no room
numbers visible (esp. on the side facing the
driveway for backstage deliveries to the
PAC.
1300
PAC
(1) over main doorway;
this area could be
much better labeled to
be visible for patrons of
the PAC
(3) alongside the
main entrance
and one at the
south-western
door near the
backstage
entrance.
The large side of 1300 facing the 1100
courtyard, and visible to students coming
from the parking lot, isn’t clearly marked;
one smaller set of gold numbers is visible
at the corner near the Grand Court, but
these are not visible from the students
coming toward campus. The corner of the
building facing 1500/1600 could also
benefit from larger numbers. One old
paper sign (Building 1300 Student
Entrance) exists on the side facing 1500
could be updated
The large tower space is one possible
location for a CHABOT COLLEGE sign that
could be visible from a great distance.

Additional Comments
Larger Bldg #s are needed at the side of
1400 visible from the courtyard and access
leading to the Grand Court. In addition,
large #s are needed at the back of the
building, alongside the access path from
the parking lot (next to 3500) and along the
back wall adjacent to the parking lot.
Building #s could be added to the side
facing 3400, as students approach that
area down a currently unmarked alley.
A campus map is needed at the
intersection of 1400 and 3500 in the
parking lot.
1500
“Technology &
Engineering Office”
appears on an older
sign above the main
entrance facing 1600;
this needs to be
removed or changed.
(2); one facing
the courtyard and
1600, as well as
the side facing
the PAC.
This building needs visible numbers on the
side facing the Grand Court, and on the
corner closest to 3500 along the path from
the parking lot.
Two classrooms (1560 and 1564) have no
obvious door numbers on the side facing
1400, and would benefit from new door
signs.
A waypoint sign pointing to the Backstage
entrance to 1300 is needed to replace the
current unique signs on that path.
A waypoint sign is needed in the courtyard
for 1600/1400/1500/3500/3400.

(4) locations

doorways at the
Grand Court and

and one more at
the back near
1400.
Larger Bldg #s need to appear over the
main entrance facing 1500, and possibly
on the side facing the Grand Court.

Need Large Building #s over both
entrances (facing Grand Court upstairs and
down and 1800 plaza).
A waypoint sign needs to be present in the
plaza between 2000, 1800, 1700, 3400,
and 1900.

Need Large Building #s over entrances
facing 1700, and 3400.
1900
(2) Planetarium &
Science Lecture Halls
(3) over main
doorways and
back door to
planetarium
While the unique dome of the planetarium
is clearly visible across the Grand Court,
the building # is not; current small gold #s
face other directions. Adding large Bdlg #s
on the side of the planetarium wall
(currently blank) would help considerably.
2000
“Science/Mathematics
Faculty Offices”
(2) over entrances
facing 1900 and 3900
(6) present near
every door.
This building has all four corners clearly
labeled with gold numbers, but nothing on
the side facing the new plaza between
1700 and 1800. Large Building #s there
would help students to identify the building
much more easily.
2100
(2) above entrances
across from 3100 and
the driveway leading to
2400/2500 and
Bookstore
(3) one next to
each accessible
doorway (facing
3900, 3100, and
Driveway)
There is no obvious Bldg # on the side
facing 3900, yet many students use that
entrance. There is also no # on the side
facing the faculty parking lot. One sign on
that side is obscured by the Central Plant
structure.
2200
“Health Science Dental
Health”
(3) at the main
doorways (upstairs and
down) facing 100, and
facing 3100.
(3) near the same
doors
Three gold sets of Bldg #s exist at the
corners; one more could be added at the
side facing 2300 and 2400.
A waypoint sign for Dental Hygiene is
needed outside that door near 3100.

(4) instances of
transom lettering exist,
over doorways facing
100, 200, and 2400.
(4) plaques exist
at corners facing
2200, 100 (2),
and 200.
Larger Bldg #s could be added to the
corner in the Driveway/Delivery area, and
to the side facing the bookstore and
building 200.
Upstairs in the back, the WorkForce
Services Center has an older sign, as does
the Student Center.

The only side of the building without
identifying #s is adjacent to 2300; this is
small, and may not really be a problem.
2500

(5) at each corner
of the facility
The building could benefit from larger
numbers visible from the courtyard behind
2300 and the Bookstore, and the corner
near to the Driveway and 2400.
2600

(2) at doorways
facing 2500 and
2700
One old sign (2600 - Physical Education
Offices) exists in the hallway facing 2700.
There are no visible numbers on the side
facing the bookstore. Old room signs say
“Lecture Room” on the side facing 2500,
but it isn’t clear what room # this is.
2700
(none)
(3) at doorways
adjacent to the
pool and parking
lot (low priority
given this Bldg’s
use)
Room 2706 doesn’t have a door sign
visible from the pool side entrance, and
should have bigger numbers over the
entrance facing the parking lot.

Bldg 4000
This renovated building needs larger Bldg
#s on the side facing the pool, the parking
lot, and the side facing 4000. Numerous
old door signs, and paper signs (2920,
2930), should be replaced. Unmarked
doors (eg. 2920) on the side facing 4000
need #s.

Larger Bldg #s need to be placed on the
corner near 2000 and 1900, to be visible
from the walkway leading from the Grand
Court. Similar numbers would help at the
corners facing 2100/2000, and 3300/2200
and the Driveway.
3400
Transom only says
“1400”
(none present must add)
This building would benefit from #s visible
from the driveway/main artery facing 1800,
and on the side facing the alley to 1400.
3500

(1) near main
entrance facing
1500
No Bldg #s are visible from the courtyard
facing 1500, nor from the direction many
students approach from 1400/1600. One
current Bldg # set is obscured by a tree. A
sign already exists over the doorway, but
this is visible only from a specific direction
(approaching from 3700).
3700
(none)
(none)
This small building is connected to 3500,
and has 3 controlled access doors
alongside a walkway with small room
numbers, and two sets of Bldg #s. It would
most benefit from Waypoint signs nearby
helping students towards the PAC, and
Buildings 3500, 1500, 1600, and 1400.

This building has perhaps the best #
signage on campus - clearly visible from
every direction and especially from the
parking lot.
3900

(5) one at each
corner and one at
the back
One possible addition would be a larger
Bldg # on the lower corner near the parking
lot.
4000
(none)
(none - must add)
This new facility needs clear, large #s
visible over its main doorway facing 2900
and the fields, and the doorways facing the
parking lot and tennis courts. Large Bldg
#s on the corner near the parking lots and
2900 should be visible.
