Capstone Project: The Justice Game
You task is to design a fun, interactive game that communicates the issues surrounding justice
we have studied this semester.
Assignment options: The Justice Game was designed as a group project. However, if you prefer
to work alone, you may. Just tell Ms K. Otherwise, you may form a group with two other
people of your own choosing. If you aren’t sure with whom you want to work, Ms K will assign
you a group.
If you want to opt out of the assignment, you may. If you do, you will need to write a 12-page
research paper that communicates the same concepts required by the game.
Steps
First, meet with your group to decide how you want to communicate. You might
consider setting up a facebook or yahoo group.
Second, select an issue or concept upon which to focus your game. (brainstorm, then
talk, then decide)
Third, decide who should be interviewed (at least 6 people total) and what needs to be
researched (at least 6 reliable sources). You may divide the work up so each group
member interviews at least two people and finds at least 2 reliable sources. Over the
break, conduct your interviews and research. Due November 28th
Forth, discuss your rational for the game. Each of you will individually write a rational
paper. Rough Draft ___________________________.
Fifth, pitch your game to the class to gather feedback, just as you would if you were
trying to sell your game to a manufacturer. They will score your game 1-10 using the
game criteria.
Sixth, for your final, complete the game. The class will play each other’s games.
Assignments
Game Criteria:
1. Your game must communicate a clear, thorough understanding of the concepts
of justice and community that we have studied this semester.
2. Your game must have a purpose, some kind of (hopefully) exciting, engaging end
goal that leads the players to want to continue/play the game. You might focus
your end goal on the completion of a task, a decision, a battle, etc…
3. You should determine the concept behind the game (an issue related to justice
or community)
4. Game players must have tasks to complete/decisions to make
5. You should set up the situation in detail.
6. You will need to write the rules of the game.
7. Your game should be fun and/or creative.
Research and Interviews:
Use your research and interviews to come to a full understanding of the
situation, issue(s), and concept you plan to present in your game. Divide the
research and interview up so everyone in your group interviews at least two
people and finds at least two reliable, relevant sources.
Write a one paragraph summary of each of your sources (about ½ page, all the
main ideas). Write up your interview notes (about one page for each interview).
Turn these in.
Rational Paper:
Your rational paper should justify your game. It should do the following:
1. Set up the situation (incorporate your research and interviews)
2. Explain the concepts the game communicates and how it communicates
them.
3. Explain why you set it up the way you did, linking to the concepts/issues
in play.
4. Explain why your end goal is relevant to the core concept the game
communicates
In short, you will be analyzing your own game. Your paper should have an intro.
(situation), body paragraphs (concepts/game in action), and a summary (end
goal of game). 4-6 pages, typed, MLA format.
Paper Pitch:
You will pitch your game to the class and they will score you, 1-10, based on the
game criteria.
