COSTUME DESIGN AND MAKEUP
Catalog Description:
42 - Costume Design and Makeup
2 units
Introduction to costume design with emphasis on construction, fabrics, basic patterns, wardrobe
planning, historical styles, history, theory, and techniques of theatrical makeup, including stylized
forms. Strongly recommended: Theater Arts 40. 1 hour lecture, 2 hours laboratory.
[Typical contact hours: lecture 17.5, laboratory 35]
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should:
1. be able to perform basic skills in connection with concept,research, sketching and construction of
historical costumes for the stage;
2. understand how to apply classroom discussion, lecture, and reading knowledge in specific
application;
3. appreciate the skills and techniques which are the basis of successful stage costumes.

Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Weekly quizzes
2. Assessment of individual performance in lab sessions
3. A semester report on the major production which will summarize the variety of responsibilities that
surround costuming for a stage production
4. A critical evaluation of the costumes of the production
