COMMERCIAL ILLUSTRATION PHOTOGRAPHY
Catalog Description:
64B - Commercial Illustration Photography
3 units
Photography as a tool for illustrating ideas and concepts relating to advertising and promotion. Studio
and location photography with emphasis on client-photographer relationships. Product and publicity
photography; use of medium and large format cameras. Prerequisite: Photography 64A completed
with a grade of "C" or higher. 2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio/laboratory.
[Typical contact hours: lecture 35, studio/laboratory 70]
Prerequisite Skills:
Upon completion of the course, the student should demonstrate an ability to:
1. understand how various light sources affect black and white and color photographic materials;
2. explain practical and theoretical differences between various light sources;
3. use various artificial light sources to produce well crafted and visually successful photographic
images;
4. produce studio photographs of products and objects faithfully rendering them in the photographic
image in black and white and color;
5. use electronic flash in the studio and in field situations;
6. produce portraits using various lighting and posing methods.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate:
1. skill in photographing products for an advertising campaign or a catalog;
2. skill in the use of medium and large format camera techniques;
3. familiarity with special developers and photographic formulas and be able to describe their use
and effects;
4. an understanding of the use of photography in advertising and the psychological impact of visual
images;
5. an ability to translate a client's verbal statements into visual images achieving desired results;
6. an ability to assemble a series of photographs which successfully demonstrate or sell a product or
idea.
